  • Food shop and wifi on site; five minutes' drive to Lynmouth harbour
In need of a Devon des res with smashing views? Lynmouth Holiday Retreat is a quiet site in the hills above Lynton and Lynmouth in the Exmoor National Park. As it's got direct access to the A39, it's a top contender if you're looking for a base to explore the Devon and Somerset coast. Needless to say, there's plenty of stunning scenery around here: keep your eyes peeled for resident wildlife like wild ponies, red deer and birds of prey. The surrounding countryside is also full of trails for rural rambles, including the long-distance South West Coast Path. Dogs are welcome at the site and direct access to footpaths makes it a breeze to keep Fido fit and healthy. Lynmouth Holiday Retreat has plenty of practical benefits too: facilities include a food shop, wifi, a washing-up area and a launderette to keep your gear spick and span. If you find yourself getting peckish, feel free to set up a barbecue, order a takeaway or head down into Lynton (five minutes away) to stock up at the supermarket. You'll likely want to linger here for a stroll around its picture-worthy cottages, fishing boats and genteel Victorian buildings. Alternatively, forage for your own supper by taking the kids crabbing down at Lynmouth harbour (five minutes' drive).

Bay View non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The best campsite we've stayed at so far. Absolutely beautiful scenery and a beautiful site. The facilities are incredible - dishwasher, sinks for washing up (bring a plug though), family bathrooms (shame these were all out of action when we went though), lovely clean shower/toilet areas, showers with changing area within the cubicles, well situated mirrors with hairdryers (could do with some plugs though so we could use our own appliances), water points dotted all around, lovely little dog walking areas and the staff were very friendly. Can't wait to visit again.

Disliked: The only negative is that we had trouble pitching the tent as the ground was rock after a couple inches of grass meaning it was difficult to get the pegs in.

Liked: Fabulous site with great views down to Lynmouth. Very peaceful. The site was kept extremely clean with great facilities. The staff were really friendly and helpful. You would need transport as very high up unless you are good with walking up hills. Definitely be back.

Bay View electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: I cannot fault this place, it is perfect. The staff are wonderful, the site is beautiful, facilities clean and there's so much to do nearby. We stayed with our dog and he loved it too (and the staff loved him which was so nice to see!) We find a new campsite each month and this is by far our favourite - can't wait to return for my birthday in July. Thank you :)

Rabbit Field electric gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Everything was excellent, no issues at all. Main points - staff very helpful and pleasant; location was great; facilities clean, well presented and very high standard (although I will echo previous reviews in that the water was far too hot in the showers); site very well maintained; enclosed dog exercise area a bonus; footpaths to various parts of the area on the doorstep. Things to consider - due to the amazing location it can get windy (I didn't feel I could use my awning) & local shops have very little choice but there is an excellent pasty shop in Lynmouth.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

The View fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Size of pitches were good and site facilities were spotless

Disliked: Very isolated site with no form of transport to and from site unless you took your own vehicles would be nice if there was a shuttle bus available from the site to lynmouth / Lynton also nothing noted online that the pub on site is closed so nearest pub/restaurants is in lynmouth which is about £10 to get to in a taxi

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We're glad to hear that you found the size of our pitches satisfactory and that you appreciated the cleanliness of our facilities. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the closure of the pub on site. We've always operated independently from the pub, and unfortunately, we don't have control over its opening or closure. We've made efforts to remove all mentions, but we understand that more visibility may be needed regarding nearby dining options. We've ensured that our site description on Pitchup accurately reflects the walkability and drivability of our location. Additionally, guests receive a welcome email seven days before arrival with details about the surrounding roads, and our welcome pack provides comprehensive information about the area and local amenities. Once again, thank you for your valuable feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and provide an even better experience.

The View fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (no awning)

Liked: Clean facilities. Personal water tap & chemical waste disposal on pitch.

Disliked: Remote location. Pizza Fridays not available. No site shop. Unless you are a mountain walker treacherous walk to Lynton through steep, wet, slippery woods. No public transport available so you need to drive everywhere. Walking on roads is a possibility however it is extremely steep & undulating whichever direction you go & I walk every day at home but this was arduous! Ring in advance if you have special requirements as we emailed before arrival but no one had read our requests. Showers take a while to become hot & push button last 10 seconds or less which makes it difficult to have a quick shower this would cause problems if site was busy.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to provide such a detailed review. We appreciate your feedback and wanted to address some points you raised. Regarding the information about the pub, we've removed all mentions following its sale, when it comes to Pizza Fridays this unfortunately had not taken place since 2022. We've always operated independently from the pub, and unfortunately, we don't have control over its opening or closure. We've ensured that our site description here on Pitchup reflects the walkability and drivability of our location. Additionally, guests receive a welcome email seven days before arrival with details about the surrounding roads, and our welcome pack provides comprehensive information about the area and local amenities. Regarding the walk to the local village, we understand that it may not suit everyone's preferences. However, many of our guests have provided positive feedback about their experiences although it may be challenging at times. We regret that you didn't bring up these concerns during your stay so we could have addressed any questioned you may have had. Special request are always considered, however due to the fact that you have booked two different pitch types we had no opportunity to accommodate the special request, however, upon arrival we did accommodate you as close as possible to each other. Regarding the showers, we've implemented water-saving features based on guest feedback, and we're continuously striving to improve our facilities. The 10s button has been now prolonged. We do have a shop onsite located in reception, stocked with essential items such as freshly baked croissants, bread, coffee, milk, bacon, ice creams and much more. Once again, thank you for your review, and we hope to welcome you back in the future.

Local attractions

Guests here have plenty of attractions and activities on their doorstep in and around Lynton and Lynmouth (five minutes' drive). For a novel way to travel between the two, try the funicular cliff railway that connects the twin towns. In the surrounding countryside, you can marvel at the geological formations of the Valley of the Rocks (10 minutes) or head out to the forest around Watersmeet (15 minutes) for waterfalls and an elegant Victorian tea room. Many head to this part of the country in search of outdoor pursuits, so sporty types may well be pleased to learn that Lynmouth Holiday Retreat is close to a stables (10 minutes), fishing lake (20 minutes) and golf club (40 minutes). To really get that blood pumping, hike some or all of the 14 miles along the coast to Combe Martin, a hilly stretch of the South West Coast Path that includes this trail's highest point. You may, of course, prefer a day lounging on the beach (and with beaches like these, who can blame you?). Top seaside towns nearby include Minehead, with its rockpools, and Ilfracombe with its castle and aquarium (both half an hour away).
