  • Scenic east Kent site set on a working fruit farm
  • Canterbury 15 minutes by car; 25 minutes to Whitstable
  • Rural scenery with peaceful orchards and a 16th-century thatched barn
The folk down at Woolton Farm know a thing or two about this stretch of land – they've been working it for over 100 years. The Mount family who run the place turn out some of the finest fruit, ciders and English wines around and are well-known in the trade. They also do a nice little sideline in setting up a pleasant, dog-friendly site where their guests can unwind on some of the loveliest bits of their farm… These include the fruit garden – where most of the varieties grown by the Mounts are on display – next to a row of cobnut trees. There are spacious green surrounds, as well as a gorgeous 16th-century thatched barn. Birds of prey like buzzards can regularly be spotted circling overhead (in the evening they can be heard mewing in the skies above). On selected days, the friendly site team set up an open-air bar to let you sample Woolton Farm's own wine and award-winning cider. Other local booze and soft drinks are for sale here, as are ice creams and strawberries (farm-grown, of course). Food is available throughout your stay from the site’s open-air kitchen, which has a woodfired barbecue. If you’d rather prep your own fodder, a washing-up area with fridges and a freezer is also available to help with meal prep. Secure charging lockers for mobile phones and other small gadgets are available free of charge. Other handy facilities include well-maintained toilets, showers and a disabled washroom. Don’t fret, the location is hardly lacking either – this well-connected site is 15 minutes' drive from the cathedral city of Canterbury and 25 minutes from top coastal spots like Whitstable beach and Sandwich.

Bell tent

Liked: Location, facilities were clean, kindness of staff, woodfire pizza, breakfast.

Disliked: The tent fabric had lot of mould which I believe is not nice to breathe, we had a baby with us and we weren’t happy about it. The bell tents are lovely and comfortable but they should be cleaned from the mould

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful setting. So nice being set away from the Barn, yet a short walk away to get drinks and Pizza. Great walked around the area, including past the zoo (where we could see elephants).

Disliked: A shower for campers would have been better.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great spot for access to the kent countryside, canterbury and short drive to the sea. Bonus is that the barn building often has cider festivals, which are great for adults and kids alike.

Disliked: A few more portaloos wouldnt do any harm. not much cell signal/ Wifi.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Clean modest facilities, great cider and pizza, staff friendly, jazz festival great fun, remote but near to a train station, everything you need to stay simple.

Disliked: Priority showers for bell tent renters. Washing up area in field out of service, not sure why.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice quiet setting, friendly staff, lovely pub with local drinks on site

Disliked: Only a portaloo (and some cold water sinks) for facilities on the camping field and have to walk across a little footbridge into another field to get to in the dark. Have to park a fair distance away to take your stuff to the pitch, they do provide wheelbarrows but still a bit of a pain.

Bell tent

Liked: Lovley atmosphere, great meal.

Disliked: We stayed in a Bell tent, with my 2 children aged 6 &8, and was disappointed to realise although we were provided with bedding, the children were not, and they ended up only having a mat to sleep on with a blanket. For the £140 per night cost we did not feel this was good value, and irmt was not explicit that bedding was NOT included. Facilities were adequate, but no milk was provided for teas and coffee.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The location and the staff. The barn was open from early to late with excellent food and drink.

Disliked: The facilities (showers, charging station) were primarily for the use of clamping pitches so we were lucky it was quiet when we started or we probably wouldn’t have been able to use them.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely to arrive after a long day on our bikes to a pint in the onsite Cidery/Barn pub garden, awesome food. The campsite had excellent supplies to make a fire, there was plenty of space between campers and the toilet facilities/wash up area was sufficient for what we needed for our one night stay.

Local attractions

This is the time to pick up a new hobby, such as golfing at the Canterbury Golf Club and Driving Range (five minutes' drive) or critiquing art at The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge (15 minutes) and Turner Contemporary (40 minutes). If it’s the old, historic sort of thing that sparks your interest the most, you might want to pay a visit to Canterbury Cathedral (15 minutes) and medieval Sandwich (25 minutes). As for those of you who haven’t had enough of the wine and cider sampling opportunities on site, what’s thought to be Britain’s oldest brewery also runs brewery tours – it’s called Shepherd Neame Brewery (25 minutes). While you’re thinking about sipping or dining on fine things, what about some Whitstable (25 minutes) oysters too? If all that tasty stuff has you wanting to get active, you could cycle some of the Viking Coastal Trail between Margate (40 minutes) and Joss Bay (40 minutes).
