We are, unoriginally, going to say oysters. But really, there are reasons why. Whitstable oysters have been harvested on the north Kent coast since Roman times and there’s now an annual oyster festival for slurping the rock oysters available all year round (for the even more yummy native/flat oysters, go camping in Whitstable from September to April).

The peaceful pebbly beach at Whitstable is popular with peeps launching themselves into the waters for kitesurfing and sailing; the Whitstable Water Ski Club welcomes new members and, for newbies, Whitstable Yacht Club has a sailing school. (There’s a pub on the beach too if sampling wares is all you intend to do, every day, on the whole hol; we shalt not judge.) In town, picnic (oysters) in the grounds of Whitstable Castle or pick up the history of the oyster trade at Whitstable Museum and Gallery… venturing ever so slightly further afield, more watersports and beaches from a Whitstable campsite are at Herne Bay two miles away, and the really ruddy wonderful city of Canterbury is within a ten-minute drive.
