  • Dog-friendly cherry orchard site in the peaceful Kent Downs
  • Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 25 minutes’ drive to Whitstable
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; pub within two minutes’ walk
Plant yourself firmly in the cherry orchard at Painters Farm Campsite beside the village of Painters Forstal in Kent, where cherries aren’t the only thing blossoming. Previously owned by the same hands for over 50 years, the new owners have injected a new lease of life into this family-friendly and dog-friendly two-acre site… welcomed by barns adorned with fairy lights and the sweet shade from cherry trees, you’ll be well-situated to take in everything from chalk cliffs to wistful woodlands in the surrounding sloping Kent Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Plus, go from grassy pitches into luscious sands, as the coastal town of Whitstable is within 25 minutes’ drive. Here, you can sample sunsets while eating oysters or head out to sea on a sailboat if you wish. The local area is certainly awash with things to do. Perhaps settle for a pint of local ale or a meal in the nearby Kentish pub, within two minutes’ stroll. You could head into Faversham (just a five minutes’ drive) for ice cream shops, cafés and pubs set in what was once a busy port in 17th-century England (famed for its wool trade). Here, walk its cutesy medieval street (one of the oldest in the country) or stock up on supplies from its supermarket within five minutes’ drive, ready for a light barbecue or campfire back on site. If you’re thirsty from the day’s jaunts, there’s also the country’s oldest family-owned brewery within 10 minutes’ drive and a large food hall with naturally scrumptious farm foods within the same distance.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely location with good toilets and showers.

Disliked We have visited this site several times, but on the last two or three occasions at a weekend or during school holidays. Sadly on each of these last occasions large groups have set up several tents or caravans next to each other on the site and played music from mid afternoon to almost the official "quiet time" of 11 p.m. Whilst not excessively loud, the continual "thump thump thump" of the music was extremely grating. I assume these are "regulars" to the site and as such I guess the wardens don't seem to want to ask them to turn the music off.

Because of this, I'm afraid we shan't be returning which is shame because in all other respects it almost the perfect site.

From the manager: Hiya,

thanks for taking time to review - just hopping in to point out that we do take seriously campers making any sort of disturbance at any time of day but playing music whilst relaxing with friends or family on the whole doesn't cross over into a breach of our rules/t&cs.

Campers on the whole will open a conversation themselves, with nearby pitches that could perhaps consider others more thoughtfully. We would only shake a stick if the matter was brought to our attention which I believe on this case it was not.

As you mentioned it wasnt excessively loud and was terminated before the quiet time - we very much hope you will vist it or almost perfect site again you will be made most welcome as always

all the best Karen and the team 😊

Electric grass pitch

Liked Love this site. Our third time visiting. Very friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Showers and toilets spotless. Small shop on site. Field next to the site where dogs can run off lead. Walked into Faversham across the fields - about 50 mins walk to the centre.

Disliked WiFi was a bit hit and miss.

Local attractions

Canterbury (20 minutes’ drive) is calling…the town is riddled with UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey and the Church of St Martin. Pick out cute eateries or shops as a resting point as you work your way around its well-documented history. If the olden times excite your mind, Belmont House and Gardens (five minutes) are nearby, with a marvellous walled garden and traditional tea room. There are more bountiful gardens (and righteous insides) at Leeds Castle (25 minutes). Balance your outings with wildlife and a visit to the safari-style The Big Cat Sanctuary (35 minutes). Or perhaps look towards the red pandas and bears lurking at Wingham Wildlife Park (half an hour). Nature also runs fairly wild in the ancient woodlands at Blean Woods National Nature Reserve (half an hour). If you’re in search of more coastal towns, you won't have to look too far. Follow the coast past Herne Bay (25 minutes and a good stop for jet skiing, windsurfing and other watersports) and into the trendy town of Margate (40 minutes) for fish and chips stalls and seaside rides.
