  • Family-friendly camping in a 16-acre Kent woodland near Canterbury
  • A 15-minute drive to Howletts Wildlife Park; Sandwich Bay 20 minutes
  • Campfires allowed; pubs and shops five minutes’ drive
What’s it to be – a back-to-nature experience or a camping break near lots of family attractions? Actually, there’s no need to choose between the two, because at Little Nash Woods Camping you can have both. Surrounded by Kent farmland near Canterbury, the pitches here are hidden away in a 16-acre woodland filled with wildlife (tread quietly and you might spot dragonflies, toads, owls and rabbits) and are seriously peaceful. Yet they’re within half an hour’s drive of the beach, zoos and a historic city… and the list could go on. Little Nash Woods is all about a stay that’s got the relaxed vibe of wild camping, but with the added bonus of spacious bathroom facilities with hot showers, flushing toilets, a family shower room, hairdryers and phone-charging points. Please note that cars are not allowed on site, but wheelbarrows are available for you to wheel gear to your pitch. How to spend time on site? Perhaps explore the woodland, borrow the badminton set from the owners or plunder the books and games for rainy-day entertainment – and you’re welcome to bring dogs along to share the fun too. Barbecues are allowed, so pick up goodies for the grill at the farm shop (five minutes’ drive); alternatively, take a stroll to a local pub (there are a couple within 40 minutes’ walk) if you’re having an evening off cooking.

Woodpecker non-electric earth tent pitch (four person, woodland)

Liked: Each pitch was far away enough from each other to give a private/wild feel. It was so peaceful. Really loved being able to have a fire pit and the bathroom facilities were amazing. The honesty shop was a great touch. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Woodpecker non-electric earth tent pitch (four person, woodland)

Liked: We absolutely loved every minute of our stay. We stayed as a group, so we were pitched on ladybug, butterfly and bumble bee pitches. Each pitch had a good distance between them, amazing area to make a fire. We could hear the lions at wingham roaring which was absolutely amazing. The games near the toilet block were brilliant. The honesty shop was fabulous. Both hosts were amazing. They had ice creams, drinks, snacks, logs ect to buy. They even had vegan magnum and oat milk ( for a dairy allergy family this was truly appreciated) Lovely lovely lovely shower/toilet block. Most relaxing weekend.

Disliked: Nothing we loved every minute. One small tip, would be to put a hand soap in the family shower bit( the one with the shower and toilet in one area) as we had to come out to wash hands. But that's a real minor thing.

Dragonfly non-electric earth tent pitch (eight person, large, wild, woodland)

Liked: It was a beautiful quiet nature campsite with hidden pitches in a wood. Lots of wildlife and starry skies. There was so much attention to detail in the set up. It looked beautiful and was very clean. Useful items for sale too. We enjoyed our campfires and the chats with the camp site owners. It couldn’t have been better and we will be back.

Local attractions

Plenty to do in these parts – so where to start first? Animal-mad families can see some of the endangered species in the breeding programme at Howletts Wildlife Park (15 minutes’ drive) – including elephants and gorillas – roaming in spacious enclosures. Energetic types can have a go on wake boards pulled on a line at Whitemills Wake and Aqua Park (five minutes), get out on the River Stour for boating adventures from Canoe Wild at Grove Ferry (10 minutes), or play golf on one of the three courses overlooking Sandwich Bay (20 minutes) before having a splash in the sea. Young kids might like to collect fossils and build dens at Betteshanger Park (15 minutes), while rides on the vintage rollercoasters at Dreamland Margate (25 minutes) will hopefully keep teens smiling. For less raucous ways of spending a day, tour the modern art at Margate’s Turner Contemporary (half an hour), or stand on the spot of a famous medieval murder at Canterbury’s famous landmark cathedral (25 minutes), visit the wonky bookshop at Sir John Boys House and admire the plantings in Westside Gardens along the Stour.
