Chaucer Farm Caravan and Camping: Space to spread out

General

  • Family- and dog-friendly site on a Kent working farm
  • A 10-minute drive from Canterbury and Herne Bay beach
  • Firewood provided; fresh eggs and farm-reared pork for sale

To the Kent countryside and a handy spot that’s equally well placed for Canterbury and the coast as well as rural wanders. Chaucer Farm Caravan and Camping is a family-friendly spot on a working farm just outside Sturry, with easy access to all sorts of days out.

If you’re in the market for a proper rural day or two, you might like to walk straight out from the site to Kemberland Wood, a couple of minutes away or take the kids up to Wildwood Trust (a couple of minutes’ drive away) to meet the animals. Elsewhere, a 10-minute drive will get you up to the coast at Herne Bay for beach days or over to Canterbury to stroll through the historic streets (and maybe learn a bit about Chaucer himself at the Canterbury Tales exhibit).

Back at base, it’s a fairly simple setup, with just a couple of toilets, a shower and chemical disposal on the facilities front, but there’s also a well-equipped play area where the kids can have a run about.

Campfires are welcome here, as long as they’re kept off the ground, and the friendly folk on site are happy to provide firewood to help you along with your blaze. Need something to cook? There’s a small supermarket a mile away, but surely your meals will be at their tastiest when made from the farm’s own provisions: fresh eggs and outdoor-reared pork (including sausages and chops) from the herd of Saddlebacks are available to buy on site.

Dog and campfire friendly site with basic, very clean facilities.03/08/2021

Maggie works amazingly hard to make this great little campsite work. The toilets and showers are cleaned regularly, and she provides fresh free range eggs as a welcome gift, and free firewood. The site also welcomes dogs (on leads) and has a climbing frame for the younger kids. The gate is always kept shut so the kids can run free around the field and play football and frisbee. I believe every pitch has an electric hookup too.
It does have some drawbacks however, the facilities are limited, so when the site is full you have to time your showers well, and the pitch sizes are a bit small.
On the whole a great basic campsite well located for whitstable, herne bay & Canterbury (with a Go Outdoors) and fantastic for families.
Great value for money for an electric pitch tent only campsite 🏕

Small site, people got together. Wide space left in centre for children to play together.

    Disliked:

Although I knew it was a basic site, was a bit disappointed to find there was only 1 male and 1 female porta loo, and 1 porta loo shower, and a single outside sink to wash and do dishes.
Everyone was saying that it was a really cheap site, but I found out they had paid £20 a night, the same as me, even though I was on my own in a small tent, and they were a family in a huge multi bedroom tent. Not fair that I was paying the same.

Portaloos, tent pitch size, cleanliness. My partner and I traveled to the closest PureGym and used our membership to be able to use a toilet and shower as the facilities at the camp site were unclean and we refused to use them. The pitches are way to close and not up to regulation at all.
There is no farm that we saw, photos on pitchup are extremely misleading. I have noticed the owners of the camp site not being too kind in their replies to bad reviews, I just want to warn other campers not to stay at this camp site. Says “back to basics” but I at least expect them to be clean. Did not feel safe from Covid19 and felt terrible for the children having to use the toilets.

Had some issues with the toilets but owners were dealing with the situation in calm manner and solved the issue asap. The place could benefit from placing buildings for toilets and showers. Our pitch wasn't perfectly level.
