General

  • Friendly site easily accessible via the M20 and M2
  • A 10-minute drive to the seaside resort of Leysdown
  • On the outskirts of Minster village

An island base in southeast England ten minutes' drive from sands and seaside resort: all is prepared for you and the crew at Plough Leisure Caravan Park on Kent's Isle of Sheppey – and it's all easily accessible via the M20 and M2.

The park is on the outskirts of the large village of Minster, home of a Saxon Abbey and its Gatehouse Museum, and a short drive from Sheppey's main seaside resort of Leysdown with its sandy beaches and six family amusement arcades. The Shellness section of the Swale National Nature Reserve is around here too, along with skinny dipping for the stout hearted at Swale naturist beach.

On-site facilities at Plough include a playground and a field for ball games; for the essentials, there's a toilet and shower block, an outdoor washing-up area, a launderette and a chemical toilet disposal point.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Below average site. Poor value for money and service 18/07/2017

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Elodie S. Confirmed

  • Non-electric grass trailer tent or tent pitch

  • Liked:

    Quiet campsite, level ground

    Disliked:

Facilities are a little basic (water splashes everywhere in sinks, toilet doors don't close etc.) and we didn't feel really welcome at all with the lady in charge pointing her finger around where we should stay and that's it. Lastly, the site didn't really feel secure with no barriers at all between the road and the campsite (not even at night).

Very friendly, laid back staff who were more than happy to help if needed. Field was a good size and there is also a large field with a play park and football posts for children to play on. Facilities were all up to standard; good toilet and shower block, drinking water available and a handy washing up area to help keep our things clean.

Other campers were friendly and respectful; no noise when the evening came. Overall, a very enjoyable weekend spent at Plough Leisure.

    Disliked:

The only thing that was a little disappointing was the fact that the heated swimming pool wasn't available for campers - it was only available for the holiday park section.

This site isn't for older people who want peace and quiet 28/06/2017

    Site was clean and tidy

    Disliked:

Didn't like that they allow any amount of visitors onto site with cars. Ended up with lot's of people's friend turning up and having outdoor loud music until gone 11.pm seems unfair we pay to pitch and they just turn up for free and party.

From the manager...

Thanks for you feedback. We take it on board as always as it helps our business to grow, but we would like to make you aware that the other people on the park were all booked in and paid for. We do understand that you would like peace and quiet, and we also want people to enjoy their holiday whilst staying on the park. We try to cater to everyone, children, young adults and the more mature person.

Nice open field, easy to find, staff was more then nice. Not bad for the price, £20 a night for a tent

    Disliked:

Male showers were dirty as hell, toilets ok I guess... could do with actually being cleaned. They have codes on the toilets ( good/bad I dunno ) but females wouldn't unlock. My other half had to use the male ones ( kinda funny )

Toilets were clean and plenty of hot water. The reception people were very friendly. The site is clean and tidy.

    Disliked:

The horrendous noise of some people around my tent that did not let us sleep. It was horrible. I did not contact the owner because I did not want to have problems with these people that were drinking much alcohol. The rules of the park include silence after 10:30 pm and someone needs to police that. Because of that I will not return to this park.

Local attractions

Start off in popular seaside town Leysdown-on-Sea for beachy days punctuated by sugary doughnuts and a fish supper or two, then make it your mission to see the nature and landscapes of Sheppey before driving off-isle into the county of Kent.

The meadows and waterways of nearby Elmley National Nature Reserve are tiptop for watching birds, insects, mammals, lizards and amphibians – and the sunrises and sunsets are pretty spectacular here too. (Give the reserve a call before setting off to check seasonal opening times.)

Between Minster and Sheerness, Barton's Point Coastal Park covers 40 acres of wide open space popular for canalside walks, cycling and kite flying, and fishing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing on its lake. Themed open days and funfairs are held in summer and a play area, café and picnic area are also around.

Around Kent, travel along to Canterbury Cathedral, guided River Stour tours and the Canterbury Tales attraction at the county capital, 40 minutes from Plough Leisure Caravan Park, and to the gorillas, lions, elephants and more of nearby Howletts Wild Animal Park and the Port Lympne Wild Animal Experience. Howletts Wild Animal Park also has a treetop challenge for your own little critters to tackle.

Kent's rural heritage is nicely covered at Kent Life in Maidstone, a family attraction with hands-on activities, play areas, tractor rides and animals to hold and feed.
