General

  • Friendly site easily accessible via the M20 and M2
  • A 10-minute drive to the seaside resort of Leysdown
  • On the outskirts of Minster village

An island base in southeast England ten minutes' drive from sands and seaside resort: all is prepared for you and the crew at Plough Leisure Caravan Park on Kent's Isle of Sheppey – and it's all easily accessible via the M20 and M2.

The park is on the outskirts of the large village of Minster, home of a Saxon Abbey and its Gatehouse Museum, and a short drive from Sheppey's main seaside resort of Leysdown with its sandy beaches and six family amusement arcades. The Shellness section of the Swale National Nature Reserve is around here too, along with skinny dipping for the stout hearted at Swale naturist beach.

On-site facilities at Plough include a playground and a field for ball games; for the essentials, there's a toilet and shower block, an outdoor washing-up area, a launderette and a chemical toilet disposal point.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Toilet block was a bit small for the amount of people staying but it was a Bank Holiday weekend so was probably busier than normal.

The site was really clean and tidy. The owner was very attentive and obviously has some great ideas on how to improve the site. There is a really good play area and field for the kids to play in which the owner informed me he is going to improve further. Also this is an extremely cheap site, costing only £79 for three nights when a lot of others were charging in excess of £200. This may be due to its locations but still incredibly cheap.

    Disliked:

I really don't want to be negative about the site as I know that the owner is aware of a lot of the issues and has plans to improve the amenities. The shower block is basic, and is obviously very basic. The door was hanging off its hinges and the toilets were very basic. The showers were also incredibly narrow and tight for a big guy like me. The water was hot in the male showers but the water was too hot in the ladies my wife informed me. I know the owner mentioned that he plans on building a completely new shower block which will be welcome. We also had an issue with the electrics for our caravan, as it kept tripping out. There was a triple adapter in the single electric outlet, which I am led to believe was put there by the owner, and adding my lead (making it three leads attached) overloaded the power socket. It was easily sorted when I ran my lead across the road to another power outlet, and the owner was very apologetic in the morning about this.

I am trying to leave a balanced review. This site has many great qualities and the reviews I have read seem to be one extreme or the other.

We stayed over a bank holiday weekend. Two adults and two children aged 10 and 3. As expected, it was busy.

I found the staff helpful when needed. The check-in process was quick and we were asked if we wanted to take our pick of available pitches.

The site is basic, but you know this when you book. In terms of facilities, there's a toilet block with showers which were cleaned regularly, and given the amount of people using them, the staff did a reasonable job keeping on top of the cleanliness. There was hand soap and toilet roll. I didn't experience queues for the showers, but I did see them, so I chose to have a shower when there wasn't a queue. I took the same approach to the washing up.

There are drinking water taps. There is a field with two football goals and a park with a swing and slide and climbing frame. That's about it. It's basic, but that's what we liked about it. No arcades, machines, and facilities that you have to pay extra for..it's a field, toilets, showers where kids make their own memories and adults can be a part of them.. and then have a beer and chill out a bit.

There was a pleasant buzz about the place, children were playing in the sun. The others staying at the site were friendly. Sure, not everyone was silent at 10pm, there was a group of younger adults near us who were talking later, but they were perfectly respectful. It wasn't rowdy at all.

    Disliked:

This is more the downside, rather than disliked...

The road at the bottom was busy for a lane. There were a lot of cars driving fast along there, which made me nervous with a little one. I can see a hedge has been planted along the roadside which will make a difference when this is established.

I think it was quite expensive. Don't get me wrong, we had a lovely time, but I think £31 per night was a bit steep.

The toilet block is dated and probably is too small for the size of the site. However, I spoke to a man who could well be the owner who reflected their recognition of this and this is being addressed, they have plans for a new block over the winter. I was there for 'Poogate' as referred to below - It was a child taking their younger sibling to the toilet, not sure the staff can account for that.

It would have been nice for my own preference for there to have been a pub and/or the beach within close walking distance, but I knew the location when I booked.

Local attractions

Start off in popular seaside town Leysdown-on-Sea for beachy days punctuated by sugary doughnuts and a fish supper or two, then make it your mission to see the nature and landscapes of Sheppey before driving off-isle into the county of Kent.

The meadows and waterways of nearby Elmley National Nature Reserve are tiptop for watching birds, insects, mammals, lizards and amphibians – and the sunrises and sunsets are pretty spectacular here too. (Give the reserve a call before setting off to check seasonal opening times.)

Between Minster and Sheerness, Barton's Point Coastal Park covers 40 acres of wide open space popular for canalside walks, cycling and kite flying, and fishing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing on its lake. Themed open days and funfairs are held in summer and a play area, café and picnic area are also around.

Around Kent, travel along to Canterbury Cathedral, guided River Stour tours and the Canterbury Tales attraction at the county capital, 40 minutes from Plough Leisure Caravan Park, and to the gorillas, lions, elephants and more of nearby Howletts Wild Animal Park and the Port Lympne Wild Animal Experience. Howletts Wild Animal Park also has a treetop challenge for your own little critters to tackle.

Kent's rural heritage is nicely covered at Kent Life in Maidstone, a family attraction with hands-on activities, play areas, tractor rides and animals to hold and feed.
