  • Well-maintained, peaceful camping field near Littlebourne in Kent
  • Five minutes’ drive to Howletts Wild Animal Park; 15 to Canterbury
  • Off-grid site with showers; firepits for hire and kindling for sale
With a peaceful, rural setting near Littlebourne in Kent, Cooll Camping offers the best of two words – tranquillity at the pop-up camping field surrounded by mature trees, plus lots of historic sights, shops and pubs as it’s on the outskirts of lovely Canterbury. Communal facilities include a rain-shower shed and a washing-up sink, as well as shared firepit; you can also rent individual firepits and buy logs and kindling so you can grill up a barbecue outside your own tent if you’d rather not do too much mingling. Pick up meat for the grill at the convenient farm shop (five minutes’ drive). If you’d prefer to abandon cooking altogether, you’ll never be short of somewhere to eat and drink, as there are loads of pubs within 10-minutes’ drive. And don’t forget that this is wild camping with no electricity (although ice pack freezing is available to keep your foodie bits and bobs fresh). Bring a torch for getting around after dark. There are two pubs within walking distance of Cooll Camping, including a popular foodie pub with great family facilities only a short walk along the bridleway and a pub 15 minutes' walk away in the village.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked: Location is wonderful within easy walk of lovely pubs and beautiful Kentish villages and streams. The entire site is on level ground, so no need for blocks. It’s super peaceful too. Loos and shower were clean and the communal fire pit gave the whole campsite warmth and character.

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Such a relaxed atmosphere. We were greeted on our arrival, given the tour of site (wonderful shower and toilets), as well as providing us with information regarding local shops, pubs and restaurants. Even though the site was busy (we were told the busiest they have ever been) we weren't on top of each other amd had plenty of space between pitches. We were supplied with a concrete slab to pop our BBQ onto, to protect the grass but BBQs and fire pits could be hired. I could not fault this campsite and would be more than happy to visit again.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely hosts, Great location for coast, walks, pubs and food. Facilities were fine, most importantly they were clean. The information sheets by the shower were a nice touch, If I had any advice for the hosts going forward, maybe a couple more loos and a shelter for the washing up area as you are going to become a popular site very soon.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: When we arrived we were greeted in a friendly manner. The owners don't have a reception but live in the house just outside the field so are always nearby if help or assistance was needed. I liked that they greeted us, they were friendly and even though it was showing as fully booked, it wasn't over crowded. I liked that they had some toys and activities set up for the community to share, encouraging the kids to all play together, as well as the communal fire pit that everyone was welcome to come to of an evening and chat. Shower and toilets were clean and accessible. The owners were friendly and socialable and provided a list of nearby activities and places to visit. Most of those were in walking distance, and the rest were not a long drive away. Really not far at all from Canterbury so great to stay if you want to explore the town properly. Will come back for sure!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike. We all enjoyed our time.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked: Basic but lovely spot , I used this pitch to stay overnight before sailing out from Dover . Drive was 15 mins.

Disliked: I have stayed at basic pitches before , I think a better shower and toilet facilities would be the only improvement but a basic setup contributes to the experience.

Local attractions

Mmm, where to go and what to do first? If you’re with the kids, Howletts Wild Animal Park is well-worth setting a day aside to see the mountain gorillas and tigers in fairly natural and expansive settings. Wingham Wildlife Park (both five minutes’ drive) offers feeding sessions with parrots and lemurs, and at the Wildwood Trust (15 minutes) you can see wild boar, deer and bears. At Herne Bay (half an hour), families can have good, old-fashioned seaside fun on the pier and in the seaside arcades, or you can take seafront walks through Herne Bay Coastal Park (25 minutes). Energetic types will be happy splashing on the water at Canoe Wild - Fordwich (10 minutes), and anglers should head for Cottington Lakes Fishery (20 minutes) for a day chasing carp. Photogenic Canterbury (15 minutes) deserves your attention too, another big-hitter for families, with the historic cathedral to tour and half-timbered buildings lining cobbled streets packed with indie shops, old-world pubs and restaurants. Look out for the wonky lines of St John Boys House, now a celebrated bookshop.
