A Venice and a romantic Verona, a Riviera and an ancient Rome, 7600 kilometres of coast and such a healthy approach to its country's cuisine that around 30,000 festivals are held every year just to celebrate its fab foodstuffs... si, it's excellent Italy.
This is land most ancient too, as you'll see if you book an Italian campsite: the likes of Caesar's lot roamed here a couple of thousand years ago of course, but the Greeks were in Sicily and southern Italy way before that, while the Etruscans hung out in the region between the Tiber and Arno rivers. Italy has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country on the planet; make for Rome, Pompei, Paestum, Lazio, Sicily and Sardinia to see the old old sights – or might you prefer to scale an aged volcano like Vesuvius or Etna...?
Or perhaps you'd rather sally forth sandwards instead. We'd suggest the Amalfi Coast of Campania, also a World Heritage Site, and, say we, one of the finest coastal stretches in all of Europe, or basking/bathing around the Italian Riviera, favoured by poetic peeps like Shelley and Byron, or soaking up sun south around Calabria... wherever you stay in Italy, you won't be far from coast and beach at which to pasta time.
And then there's Tuscany. And utterly fab Florence: you may have heard that Italy had quite the role to play in kickstarting modern art and culture in Europe via the Renaissance... And the opera and the art, and the fashion and the shopping and the national parks... And frankly we'd be here for weeks if we attempted to list the highlights of Italy's excellent all, so we'll suggest browsing the sites below or searching by region or feature, and then clicking on the 'Local attractions' tab to boot up ideas for an outstanding Italian stay.
