  • Campsite with stunning mountain views an hour’s drive north of Belluno
  • Ombretta Valley hikes from the site; Sottoguda five minutes’ drive
  • Restaurant, bar and shop; free shuttle to the ski lifts in winter
Got your sights set on the Italian Alps? Consider pitching up at tree-shaded Camping Marmolada Malga Ciapela, roughly an hour north of Belluno in the Veneto. This leafy site has a spectacular backdrop of Marmolada – the rugged peak nicknamed ‘Queen of the Dolomites’ – a range of accommodation options from wild camping to luxury glamping, and a host of handy services to make your life very easy indeed. Surrounded by greenery and neatly landscaped, the site is springboard to mountain adventures (any four-legged chums are welcome to share in the action too); you can refer to signage and maps around the place or ask the expert staff members at reception for advice about summer hiking, mountain biking and skiing in winter. On those days where you don’t feel like stirring from home base, settle down on a deck chair on the sun deck and soak up some alpine rays. Barbecues are allowed on site – there’s a designated area with firewood supplied – although you can divert straight to El Morbin, the chalet-style terrace restaurant serving breakfast, snacks and aperitifs. There’s also a useful bread pick-up point in reception and a store for replenishing supplies. Family-friendly facilities include a rather swish tiled shower block, a coin-operated laundry room and washing-up sinks. There are swings and a trampoline for younger kids tucked away among the trees, and plenty of secure parking for cars.

Local attractions

Winter visitors for the skiing will be delighted to hear that a free shuttle bus runs up to the Marmolada cable car, which operates between Malga Ciapela (five minutes’ drive) and Punta Rocca station, where there’s a panoramic terrace overlooking Punta Penìa, the highest peak in the Dolomites. The extensive Arabba–Marmolada ski area (40 minutes) has pistes for all levels of ability as well as access to the challenging Sella Ronda ski circuit. During summer, the Malga Ciapela region offers countless outdoor options, from hiking the Ombretta Valley right from your pitch to mountain biking in the lakeside Passo Fedaia (10 minutes) area. The bolder among you can try the Via Ferrata Lipella rock-climbing course (50 minutes), or go whizzing down zipwires at Zipline San Tomaso Cableway Belluno (half an hour). Less physically demanding days out include a trip to Sottoguda (five minutes), a traditional Dolomites hamlet where you can watch artisans at work, buy souvenirs and lunch in cosy pizzerias. Most kids will love you for taking them to Kingdom of Salvan–Buffaure (55 minutes) for trekking across alpine meadows with alpacas.
