The pool

General

  • Peaceful family site 50 metres from the beach on Lake Garda
  • Book boat trips and tickets to local events and shows at reception
  • 20-metre outdoor pool with sun terrace and sun loungers

You'll be bang next to lovely Lake Garda with a stay at Camping Il Faro in Italy’s Lombardy region: this peaceful family-run waterside site is 50 metres from a lake beach between Rocca di Garda and San Biagio island, and also within easy reach of pedalo rentals, watersports and hikes.

Welcoming guests since 1980, this is a peaceful site that places emphasis on relaxing among spectacular surrounds; there’s no entertainment here – just a series of gentle distractions. Ping pong tables and a small sports area are on hand for active times, and for afterwards, there's a fine big 20-metre outdoor pool, and a roomy sun terrace with deckchairs alongside. A grassy relaxation area with umbrellas and yet more sun loungers dotted around is at your disposal too for more spells spent horizontal.

Pitches are spacious, grassy and offer plenty of shade from the scorch of the Italian sun, and when it comes to feeding time, guests are welcome to sizzle up their own fodder on the barbecue or make the most of all the soft grassy areas around the site and park up with a picnic.

If you're up for venturing off site, tickets can be reserved for local events and shows, and boat excursions can be booked from nearby marinas to Sirmione, Bardolino and Lazise right on site, at the reception area’s handy tourist info point.

We were not told about the toilet block being constructed with workmen being on site during the early hours. Refuse bins at the entrance to the park in front of the view of the lake rather strange!

    - tent pitch
    - the view and location of the camping
    - close 2 bars and eating places
    - hygiene of the camping

    Disliked:

    - the sanitary block is being renewed @ the lake view pritches, so it was partially open and the showers had only cold streaming water (in the hot weather we had, it wasn't a problem 4 me and my 11 yrs old son).
    - 4 washing the dishes you needed 2 walk 2 the back off the check in office (because of the te renewal of the sanitary block).
    - no shop with small things or food on the camping site, no problem if you've got transportation, there are supermarkets close-by and shop in the street with batting things and restaurants on the lake walks 😎

The size, level and shadiness of the pitches were great. The atmosphere was lovely and homely - everyone was extremely welcoming. The site has excellent proximity to the lake, with a nice beach and bar just outside the gates. We stayed during a severe storm and the staff came and checked on us as soon as the worst was over, even though it was the middle of the night. We would recommend this campsite to anyone!

Very mixed feelings about this site08/08/2019

The Swimming Pool, which was open 10am to 12:30 then 3:30pm to 7pm. It was a good size and quite popular though there were times it was quieter which was lovely. The Showers and wash facilities were clean and adequate (just remember you need your own loo roll) We were given a large level pitch in the shade as requested.
    Good wi-fi

    Disliked:

Lack of restaurants, bars etc in the area. There are a couple of pizza restaurants and an ice cream/gelato shop. That’s it. Nearest supermarket about 10 min drive.

We now think that we made a mistake booking this site as we did not realise that the vast majority of pitches seem to be permanent fixtures and are holiday homes for Italians - as a consequence there is a different atmosphere- and tourists seem a bit like second rate citizens. There is a lot of oafish behaviour from teens and children, who have holiday homes at the site, at night time between about 7:30pm and 11pm/midnight when they run riot around the site, especially the swimming pool area, shouting out and making really excessive amounts of noise, chasing each other, falling over tent guy ropes etc. We were quite shocked that this was never once tackled in the 6 nights of our stay. It was obviously usual behaviour for these residents, Added to that there is an insane amount of noise from ‘entertainment’ on other neighbouring sites which also went on until about midnight. This seemed to range between very poor Karaoke, to untalented local singers. There was no chance at all of having a peaceful evening and my husband had to resort to using headphones every night to drown it out. Not exactly the chillax we had hoped for.

We did not realise that there is no port where we were staying, despite lakeside location and it’s about a 12 min drive to nearest port to use ferry to travel round the lake.

On arrival we experienced a total lack of interest from the lady who booked us in and no information at all was provided on arrival.

Local attractions

A serviced and dog-friendly beach is next to the site, a 50-metre stroll away. You can hire pedalos here, or should you be in the market for something just a tad more adrenalised, ask the friendly site team about which nearby spots are good for watersports (there are plenty).

From the site you can also embark on highly scenic promenades around Garda’s pretty perimeter, or into the surrounding countryside among olive and lemon groves and palm, oleander and orange trees. The climb up to Rocca di Garda is a trip well worth taking, as here you’ll be 650 feet above the waters below for an utterly spectacular vista.

To keep the kids topped up with gleeful squeals, visit Gardaland theme park for rides and attractions to suit all ages (including grownups), and to the neighbouring Gardaland SEA LIFE Aquarium to witness live shark feeding (if you’re not too squeamish) and to explore its 13 themed areas with 40 tanks housing more than 5,000 water creatures.
