  • Glamping site a 10-minute drive from Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume
  • Aix-en-Provence 45 minutes’ drive; Marseille one hour
  • Private Jacuzzi and plunge pool; communal kitchen; massages available
On the outskirts of the historic town of Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (10 minutes’ drive), surrounded by ancient oak trees and shrubs of aromatic herbs, Ecolodges en Provence is a place for those who are after a glamping experience with a rustic twist. Accommodation is in spacious yurts, and the rustic element refers mainly to their structure (of rough-hewn stone and wood, with a bamboo roof featuring a hole for stargazing). Some might argue that the composting toilet also falls under the ‘rustic’ banner… Everything else is very much about comfort and pampering, though, starting with your own private Jacuzzi (with 30 massage jets), which you’re welcome to use at any time – even long after your fingers have started to prune, if you so desire. Each yurt also has its own outdoor plunge pool, if you would rather have your soak alfresco, and a seating area shaded by a large umbrella, where you can relax while playing the board games provided or just listening to birdsong. Other excellent touches in the yurts include the travertine-tiled shower and the well-equipped hot drinks corner, which features a proper coffee machine with a bean-grinding function for fans of espresso and a selection of organic teas, plus a toaster. For more elaborate meals, there’s a communal kitchen with a fridge, gas hob and a small oven, or you can request an organic meal. Finally, if you want to crank the wellness aspect right up to the max, you can arrange a massage or a relaxation session with friendly site owners Béatrice and Pierre.

Local attractions

Built in the late 1400s, the Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume houses a relic of Mary Magdalene that made the town a popular pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. Believers would also go to the Grotte Sainte-Marie Madeleine (45 minutes’ drive), the cave where the saint is said to have died. The birthplace of Paul Cézanne, Aix-en-Provence (45 minutes) celebrates its famed son in the Musée Granet, where paintings by this Impressionist artist sit alongside works by Léger, Picasso and Giacometti. The tree-shaded Cours Mirabeau street is anchored at either end by elaborate fountains. Within the vast harbour area of Marseille (one hour) are interesting institutions like the Mucem - Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean and the Marseille Soap Museum. Take the Petit Train to reach the Basilica of Notre-Dame of la Garde, symbol of the city and its highest point, with predictably spectacular views.
