Camping near Saint-Tropez for peace-seekers and party types
Let’s start with getting one thing straight: you’re unlikely to find many campsites in Saint-Tropez itself, what with its streets being pretty crammed already. But a stay a little way out of town isn’t a downside – au contraire, it’s really rather lovely to have some open space to retreat to when the buzz of town gets a bit much (especially if you’ve got tiddlers who need to do a bit of running about).
Saint-Tropez isn’t the only urban centre around here of course, so you could always seek out a place to stay in one of the nearby towns or villages if you want to keep amenities like bars and shops within easy reach. Some campsites near Saint-Tropez offer bike hire to help get around too (particularly handy if you’re aiming to park up on a motorhome or caravan pitch and continue roaming on two wheels).
Alternatively, max out the contrast stakes by heading a little way up into the hills to settle in a peaceful location – that way, you can dip in and out of the towns and beaches down at the coast but also spend time soaking up some scenic views and serenity back at base.

Even though you’re not staying right there in town, it’s worth spending a fair bit of time sashaying about in Saint-Tropez. If you’re here in high summer that may well involve rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous; outside of those months, the town regains a hint of the fishing-village vibe that made it famous in the first place.
Either way, you’ll want to take an amble around the harbour and through the old fishing quarter, poke about at Place des Lices market and climb up to the citadel for splendid views over the town and the coast. The coastal light has drawn lots of artists here over the years, and you can admire some of their efforts at Musée de l’Annonciade (said to be one of the finest collections of neo-Impressionist paintings in all the land).
All that and you’ve not even hit the beach yet… that’s something you can do in Saint-Tropez, of course (try Tahiti beach for the proper beach club vibe), or you could head out of town a little for something a bit different. Nikki and Pampelonne are good family picks, while Bonne Terrasse is a wilder pick for those who like to have a little hike before their dip.
Where else? Well, maybe a little inland for walks among vineyards, old windmills and the like, a day trip to one of the waterparks in Fréjus, a wander among the greenery of Domaine du Rayol Gardens, some snorkelling along the coast, a bit more celeb-spotting in Cannes…
