  • Well-equipped lakeside pods at a Kent fishery near Woodchurch
  • A 20-minute drive to Rye or Sissinghurst Castle Garden
  • Kitchen and shower room in each pod; free fishing for guests
What a cracker of a Kent glamping setup… the stylish pods at Shirkoak Fishery are in an excellent location and fabulously equipped for outdoor stays, whether you’re into fishing or not. Of course, staying right by the lake at a fishery is a huge bonus if you’re keen on fishing – and it’s all included here, with guests having access to the three-acre carp fishery by day or by night to see what they can catch from the stocks of carp (up to 30+lb), pike (up to 24lb) and other coarse fish. That said, you don’t have to have any dealings with the fish if you don't want to – the peaceful lakeside pods also make a good base for a break spent exploring rural Kent, perhaps strolling to the pubs and vineyard around the village of Woodchurch (all within a half-hour walk), visiting lovely places like Sissinghurst Castle Garden and Leeds Castle, or heading to the coast for seaside strolls and beach days. You may like to eat out in one of those local pubs, but there’s also the option of cooking back at base – each pod has its own kitchen corner (with hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, toaster, kettle and an assortment of pans and utensils), plus a picnic table outside so you can consume meals while gazing out over the lake. Also inside the pod are an ensuite shower room and a pair of comfy twin beds. Bed linen and towels are provided here, so you won't need to bring much kit along, making this a handy place to consider if you’re in need of a stopover on the way to/from the ferry ports or Channel Tunnel, or travelling by public transport (bus stops are just a couple of minutes away).

Camping pod

Liked: Very comfortable , clean pod with everything you could need for a short stay, in beautiful surroundings. Hugh and Sarah are the most welcoming hosts , very approachable and the dinners that they delivered to our pod were delicious. We will definitely be going back. Sadly for us the fishing was very very slow but as we know that's how it goes !

Camping pod

Liked: The Pod was fantastic and provided all the requirements for our stay. The food delivered daily to the Pod was both good value for the price and was piping hot on arrival. The setting was beautiful and on the whole the weather was kind to us.

Disliked: Sadly the fishing did not live up to expectations and is predominantly aimed at the Big Carp Anglers

From the manager: Thank you very much for choosing to stay with us and writing a review, however, we felt we must address a couple of the issues you have raised to assist future pitch up bookers.... Firstly you stayed as 2 adult men sharing the pod you did not bring any children with you so we are unsure why you have given us a child friendly score of 1. Secondly If you look at our list of facilities we do not offer WIFI because there is no connection to the lake. lastly, we strive to be courteous to all our guests, we offered you an early check in and on the day you left, you chose to leave early. With regards to the fishing - this was included in the price of your stay for 2 people. The price for the pod is the same whether you choose to fish or not. Our 3 acre lake has Carp to 33lb but there are many species to fish for, such as, Roach, Rudd, Bream, Tench, Pike, Perch.... We understand that you managed to catch a lovely carp weighing over 19lb? Unfortunately we are not in control of the weather or if the fish are choosing to bite!!! Whilst we except constructive criticism mother nature is above our control. Hugh & Sarah

Local attractions

Start with a stroll to Woodchurch (about a 20-minute walk), to see the Woodchurch Windmill (a classic Kentish smock mill), take a tour at award-winning Woodchurch Wine or stop for a drink in the pub. Slightly larger Tenterden is 10 minutes' drive away and has some lovely shops along with a golf club and another vineyard (Chapel Down, 15 minutes' drive from the fishery). Drive south for about 20 minutes and you’ll come to the historic Cinque Port town of Rye, a great place for a day of wandering. Elsewhere along the coast you can also visit the dunes of Camber Sands, explore Britain’s only desert at Dungeness or go birdwatching at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve (all half an hour). For other days out, try the South of England Rare Breeds Centre (five minutes), splendid Sissinghurst Castle Garden (20 minutes) or Leeds Castle (half an hour), known as ‘the loveliest castle in the world’.
