The Original Hut Company: Enjoying a locally sourced lunch

General

  • Family-friendly site on the River Rother with Bodiam Castle views
  • In 1066 Country and a half an hour’s drive from Hastings
  • Spa hut, communal cooking area, bar, coffee shop and pizza nights

Huddle up in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on a break at The Original Hut Company, a swish farm site within spitting distance of Bodiam Castle in the village of the same name. With glimpses of the stately structure to be seen through the trees and the gentle sounds of the steam trains from the Kent & East Sussex Railway chugging in the distance, this park’s an atmospheric place to lay your head.

If the ambient sounds haven’t lulled you to sleep just yet, stroll to the bottom of the site for walks along the River Rother or stretch your legs on a wander around the rest of the 200-acre farm. When it’s time for a sit down, a coffee shop in the grounds serves barista-style coffee. Visiting on a Friday? Pizza nights are put on in the summer months and stiff drinks are to be had at the well-stocked bar any time of year.

Set yourself up for days of explores with a full breakfast – being on the Kent and East Sussex border in 1066 country, this family farm park’s a splendid spot for getting out and about. It’s a half-hour drive to Hastings for checking out the famed battle site and a 35-minute drive to Camber Sands beach if seaside sessions are on the cards.

Great British weather gone and let you down? Scuttle back to the site and cuddle up at the communal covered space, with its open fire and cooking facilities. Or better yet, dial up the decadence of your trip with a massage in the spa hut…

Lovely location. We walked to the castle and hired a canoe to paddle in the river. River was not really suitable for swimming but perhaps because it’s been so dry. We were in the poplar field which had lovely pitches under the trees. Didn’t use the hub much but the food looked good. My kids had a great time playing with others at the campsite. Showers were lovely.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately the chemical toilets were very smelly. They were well stocked and maintained so no fault of the campsite staff at all, just a side effect I suppose.

From the manager...

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your visit, I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip and we'll hope to see you again one day! Sorry for the chemical loo was a bit smelly, sometimes that is just how they are when it's really hot. We only really have them there for convenience overnight as the main loo and shower block in the car park has more than enough flush loos for the whole site. We have considered removing them... I'm glad it didn't affect your experience

Nice views. Spacious flat pitches. Quiet and remote location. The wild spa looked like a really nice idea - have not seen this anywhere else.

    Disliked:

Disappointed on arrival(7pm) there was nobody there and no answer to the phone number provided (no follow up communication either). I had to pitch up and hope to find facilities. The toilets I found in the car park were not nice. The showers looked gross. I did not use either.

From the manager...

Thank you for your valued feedback, after speaking to you on the telephone today I have fully investigated this matter and it appears that due to human error your booking was accidentally set to "arrived" and that is why there was no one on site to check you in. Our check-in process is usually completely seamless so I can only sincerely apologise for this mistake, I have fed this back to the check in staff. I have also added a mobile number to our Pitch Up listing to enable better contact in the future for when the office is unmanned.

LOVED our first little camping trip away with our 3 and 7 year!
Such a great place- The Hub was brilliant to have on site with a great little play area to run off some steam, staff helpful and friendly.
We took a trip to Bodiam castle a short walk away from site and had a brilliant day out there.
Pizza night (Fridays) is a most- so yummy!
The shower- we love a shower in the family and my goodness the showers in the small hut in our field was a amazing!

    Disliked:

    Toilet….. very stinky (chemical loo)!
We had read reviews so was aware of this before our arrival so used the toilets near the Hub mostly and most certainly hasn’t put us off.

    Disliked:

Allocated pitches, so no choice where you set up. Ban on fire pits was in place due to hot weather...no pre warning of this so loaded up fire pit, logs etc unnecessarily and kids were disappointed not to be able to toast marshmallows.

From the manager...

Hi Nicholette,
Thank you for taking the time to review our site. I'm pleased you enjoyed the location and your children enjoyed their stay. Having been running here for a long time we enjoy a lot of repeat visitors many of whom return with friends. I understand the frustration of allocated pitches the reason for this is to ensure that groups of guests traveling together have pitches together this can be a tricky task with different check in and check out days. We try to keep separate areas of the site for groups for single pitch users. This week allocation has worked slightly differently as we have prioritised offering pitches in the shade during the extremely hot dry weather. Details of the increased fire risk assessment were sent to you on your pre arrival notes I'm sorry to hear that you have missed this. It is not a decision we have taken lightly but following consultation with the local fire brigade was the only responsible course of action to ensure the safety or all our guests. This is something that has been well reported on national television following recent wild fires. The situation will be reviewed as soon as we have a meaningful amount of rain that changes the ground conditions. I note you have rated the wifi as 2, the site is off grid as advertised, however there is wifi freely available 24 hours a day from The Hub cafe and the area immediately outside it.

Beautiful site. Showers are clean, plenty of hot water and chemical toilets are ok. Easy access to the river where we spent an enjoyable afternoon with the kids paddle boarding and canoeing. Enjoyed a lovely walk along the river towards the castle. Kids could ride their bikes and play with freedom. They absolutely loved it and didn’t want to leave. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely go back.

Local attractions

There’s all sorts to do near this park, from tastings at award-winning vineyard Chapel Down (half an hour’s drive) to touring National Trust and English Heritage properties. Traditional towns like Rye and Tenterden are within 30 minutes of the park for urban times as well, while Royal Tunbridge Wells takes 40 minutes to reach if you’re up for pottering around The Pantiles’ Georgian architecture.

Back near the park, wander through the orchards to the 14th-century Bodiam Castle, around a 20-minute stroll away, then stop in the local pub on your way back for an ale (or three). Kayaks and paddleboards can be hired in the village while you’re in the area for splashing about on the River Rother.

Rather sit on the saddle? Bring your bikes along on the trip and head out on the off-road farm trails to soak up the stunning Sussex scenery without having to share the road with any cars.
