  • Off-grid site with green credentials and views of Bodiam Castle
  • In 1066 Country and a half an hour’s drive from Hastings
  • Communal cooking area, bar, café, shop, events and on-site activities
Huddle up in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on a break at The Original Hut Company, an off-grid farm site within spitting distance of Bodiam Castle in the village of the same name. With glimpses of the stately structure to be seen through the trees and the gentle sounds of the steam trains from the Kent & East Sussex Railway chugging in the distance, this park’s an atmospheric place to lay your head. If the ambient sounds haven’t lulled you to sleep just yet, stroll to the bottom of the site for walks along the River Rother or stretch your legs on a wander around the rest of the 200-acre farm. When it’s time for a sit down, a coffee shop in the grounds serves barista-style coffee. Visiting on a Friday? Pizza nights are put on in the summer months and stiff drinks are to be had at the well-stocked bar any time of year. The site also prides itself on its green credentials and runs an immersive back-to-nature experience which aims to have a minimum impact on the immediate environment. All of the pitches are off-grid, minimise vehicle movement and have a quiet policy. The Hub (the on-site coffee shop) provides wifi and charging facilities for those who need it. Set yourself up for days of explores with a full breakfast – being on the Kent and East Sussex border in 1066 country, this family farm park’s a splendid spot for getting out and about. It’s a half-hour drive to Hastings for checking out the famed battle site and a 35-minute drive to Camber Sands beach if seaside sessions are on the cards. Great British weather gone and let you down? Scuttle back to the site and cuddle up at the communal covered space, with its open fire and cooking facilities. Or better yet, dial up the decadence of your trip with a massage in the spa hut…

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Expectations we exceeded and had an amazing weekend. Welcomed with a very friendly camp manager who had carefully selected our sites based on ages of our children. Our neighbours had kids exactly the same ages and the kids played all weekend. The shower was great. The 'Hub' or main area was perfect with great seating arrangements near with outdoor play area. Drinks sold were of good quality - coffee and alcohol. Gift shop had brilliant stuff for sale. Highly recommended pizza and cocktail night on a friday! Highly recommended taking advantage of the on site water activities - including a mega SUP (paddleboard for 8ppl). We never got a chance to take steam train, but did have a visit to nearby Bodium Castle. 2 pubs near by too. And local Londis for essentials.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: We stayed for three nights. The pitch and all facilities were level, quiet and clean. There was plenty of space for children to play safely Or go paddle boarding. All other campers there and the site staff were friendly. There is a pub only 10 minutes walk away next to Bodiam Castle. Also, the site has its own Cafe/shop with great breakfasts and lunches, and on Friday nights it’s pizza and cocktail hour! There are plenty of things to visitor attractions to see nearby, Bewl Water, Kent and East Sussex railway, Bodiam Castle, Rye, Hastings, Tenterden, Battle and beaches at Rye or Camber sands. We only live half an hour away, but it was great all the same! Thank you very much !

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Nice pitches well away from any roads so it really felt like we were in the middle of nature. Good little walk along the river to Bodiam. Friendly staff and everywhere was clean and tidy. Nice to have a cafe/bar and play area on site and plenty of green space for children to run around.

Disliked: Toilets/showers were quite far away from our pitch. Cafe/bar prices were quite high.

Liked: Fantastic weekend - thank you - great riverside location surrounded by beautiful willows and countryside - paddleboarding, walking, chilling - couldn't be better - and with very considerate fellow campers all around of all ages - communal bathroom and toilet facilities very well kept and clean!

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: We had motorhomes but stayed in the tent pitches place, Poplars. Thank you. It was a beautiful campsite, adequate facilities, the Faith in Nature soap was helpful in the chemical loo. The hot water for showering and dishwashing was great at any time. We liked the fact that you didn't want cars around, as it made it safer for all the families there. We were very relieved to be near some trees, for respite from the strong winds. we went to the Hub this morning, where we queued for your excellent croissants. It was a little bit awkward launching the paddle boards yesterday as it was so crowded. We look forward to visiting again. Juliet

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Loved the picturesque site right next to the river but safe for young children to play. Great cafe and shop. A very short walk along the river to the castle and the steam railway meant the car was redundant!

Disliked: While other reviews had pointed out the smell of the toilets, and while the aroma is not pleasant it stays at the block. The proximity to the tents also far outweighs the negatives. The cafe could have been open a little earlier for breakfast.

Local attractions

There’s all sorts to do near this park, from tastings at award-winning vineyard Chapel Down (half an hour’s drive) to touring National Trust and English Heritage properties. Traditional towns like Rye and Tenterden are within 30 minutes of the park for urban times as well, while Royal Tunbridge Wells takes 40 minutes to reach if you’re up for pottering around The Pantiles’ Georgian architecture. Back near the park, wander through the orchards to the 14th-century Bodiam Castle, around a 20-minute stroll away, then stop in the local pub on your way back for an ale (or three). Kayaks and paddleboards can be hired in the village while you’re in the area for splashing about on the River Rother. Rather sit on the saddle? Bring your bikes along on the trip and head out on the off-road farm trails to soak up the stunning Sussex scenery without having to share the road with any cars.
