  • Peaceful, natural and eco-friendly site in rural Provence
  • A 20-minute walk to Forcalquier; 10 minutes' drive to Les Mourres
  • Well-equipped kitchen and dining area on site
It’s all about the unspoiled nature and big open skies at Le Ciel Ouvert, a peaceful rural Alpes-de-Haute-Provence site surrounded by natural scrubland 20 minutes’ walk from the town of Forcalquier. Part of preserving the peace here involves keeping the site car free – it’s only accessible on foot so you’ll park in the dedicated car park and walk the 50 metres to where you’re going to stay. The owners are keen to preserve the natural environment too, so they’ve installed an ecological planted filter system to deal with wastewater. It’s the natural environment that draws most people to this area, and once you’re settled you’ll be able to head out nearby for days of hiking, biking, climbing, canyoning, horse riding and things like hot air balloon rides – or wanders around traditional villages, markets and the like. It may well be the countryside peace that’s brought you to this site, but it’s handy to have the amenities of Forcalquier within easy reach too – it’s got plenty of shops and places to eat, along with historic attractions, and bus stops for those times when you’d like to travel further afield. Back at base, the shared facilities include a well-equipped kitchen (with gas stove, oven, fridge, coffee maker and lots of crockery and the like) and a common room with tables where you can eat meals or just relax. There’s also a shared bathroom block with toilets and showers.

Local attractions

Your first port of call should be Forcalquier – ideally on a Monday, when one of the region’s biggest markets is held in the town. On any day, the atmospheric Old Town is lovely for a wander, with narrow streets leading to old chapels, a Gothic fountain and the 12th-century cloister of the Couvent des Cordeliers. You should also climb up to the Citadel for stunning views across the Alps and the surrounding area. Want to take a closer look at those surroundings? A hike around the interesting rock formations of Les Mourres (10 minutes’ drive) is a great place to start, or perhaps something more challenging at Montagne de Lure (35 minutes). If you don’t fancy hiking there are several outfits nearby that can help organise things like horse riding, canyoning or hot air balloon flights. Staying firmly on the ground, you might like to visit Château de Sauvan (10 minutes) or the château ruins in Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt (50 minutes). And as this is Provence, lavender is never too far off – you can visit the L’Occitanie en Provence factory museum (half an hour) or stroll through the fields of Lavandes Angelvin (35 minutes).
