  • Well-equipped site in the Vendée, a 15-minute drive from the coast
  • Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Dino’s Park 25 minutes’ drive
  • Playground and aquatic park; cycle hire; evening entertainment
Parents who want to reward their kids for a year of good grades in school ought to book at Camping Village de la Guyonnière, in the Vendée region of western France, between Saint-Julien-des-Landes (five minutes’ drive) and La Chaize-Giraud (10 minutes). With 30 hectares of space to run around in, children here can let off some serious steam. And it’s not just about room to roam, either: an on-site waterpark comes with two pools (indoor and outdoor), a waterslide and spray rings. When you drag the kids away from the aquatic park (lest they turn into little prunes), they can visit the resident farm animals; make new friends in the playground or at the kids’ club; or (on bad-weather days) catch up with their favourite shows in the TV room. While the children are busy doing all that, the grown-ups can improve their pétanque game, relax in the hot tub or hit the shores of Lac du Jaunay (a 300-metre stroll away), a popular spot for fishing, walking or cycling. (Speaking of which, you can hire a bike on site and explore the surrounding area on two wheels.) Or you can all head to the beach: the sandy Plage de la Parée is a 15-minute drive away. And in the evening, the whole family can gather for the organised entertainment, which ranges from live music and disco nights to magicians and quizzes. In addition to a café and a food shop with local produce, there’s a launderette, plus a toilet and shower block with facilities for disabled guests.
