  • Amerindian tipi camp on a private meadow in the Pays de la Loire
  • A 15-minute drive to Solesmes Abbey; 50 minutes to Zoo de La Flèche
  • Themed events, animal encounters, gift shop, bar and restaurant
Created in the Pays de la Loire countryside by Jean Lemoro in 2003, an aficionado of Amerindian culture, Les Tipis du Bonheur de Vivre is more than a simple tipi glampsite. It’s one of the few places in France that provide a real immersion in this indigenous culture. Here’s a real chance to explore the culture of Native Americans and understand their profound connection with nature. Scattered over a 17-acre meadow site, each tipi – they’re all genuinely Amerindian – contains a firepit that you can light (and chop your own wood) at night to keep everyone warm. Your foodie needs are taken care of from morning to night, with dishes inspired by traditional Amerindian flavours. To take a souvenir home, pick up quality Amerindian products – from fringed leather jackets to dream catchers – in the on-site boutique. Several outdoor activities revolve around Amerindian culture too, like wolf and horse encounters, or themed Amerindian days and evenings with dancing in the circular tipi lodge. Occasional musical extravaganzas (written by Jean Lemoro) recreate the history of the Amerindian people in the USA. Elsewhere on the site, you can laze on the supervised beach and take a dip in the lake, go fishing and canoeing, or rent pedalos and water karts. Back on dry land, play tennis or pétanque, try your hand at archery or follow the fitness trail. To explore further afield into the Pays de la Loire, hire mountain bikes (or electric bikes, so much easier on the legs) from reception.

Local attractions

Should you feel the need to briefly return to reality during your stay at Les Tipis du Bonheur de Vivre, it’s 15 minutes’ walk into sleepy Brûlon, with a medieval church and 16th-century priory to explore, and a handful of terrace bars for your morning café au lait. When you’ve had your caffeine kick, there’s some seriously spectacular religious architecture to see at Solesmes Abbey (15 minutes’ drive), perched over the river Sarthe and open for tours of its church and gardens. Fine porcelain dinner services and flamboyant glazed animals are on display at the Musée de la faïence et de la céramique à Malicorne (25 minutes), where you can join ceramic workshops and pick up quality pottery souvenirs. If the kids object to too much culture, treat them to the wallabies, lemurs and chattering parrots at Spaycific Zoo (35 minutes). If that’s not enough animal magic for them, the Zoo de La Flèche (50 minutes) should satisfy with sea lion shows, raptor flying displays and lions, tigers, grizzly bears and elephants in spacious enclosures.
