  • Peaceful Pas-de-Calais motorhome site a 10-minute drive from Doullens
  • Amiens 40 minutes’ drive; Bay of the Somme an hour and 10 minutes
  • Catch-and-release fishing pond and pétanque court; dogs welcome
If you’re driving around north-eastern France in your motorhome and would like to spend a few days exploring the moving World War I sites and memorials around the Somme Valley, Domaine de l’Authie makes a pretty excellent home base. This peaceful spot sits on the outskirts of the village of Amplier, close to the border between the Pas-de-Calais and Somme departments. On site you can relax with a game of pétanque, make friends with the resident animals (which include rabbits, chickens and a rather dashing goat named Oréo) or go exploring the surrounding countryside with your dog (a welcome guest, as long as it is well behaved and you pick up after it). Alternatively, you can get some ‘me’ time sitting on the banks of the fishing pond. While the site runs a catch-and-release policy, if you fancy catching something for the barbecue, it’s possible to do so along the Authie river, a popular spot for trout. (Please note that a fishing permit is required.) If the fish don’t bite and you end up needing to buy provisions for the grill, there are supermarkets and independent shops in Doullens (10 minutes’ drive), where there are also pizza places, fast-food-joints and bars. Please note there is no electric hook-up at the site.

Local attractions

If you have your bike with you, the Véloroute De La Mémoire is a great way to explore this historic region. The nearest spot to access this 56-mile route, which links Amiens to Arras, is the town of Albert (half an hour’s drive). While cycling, you’ll go past important WWI sites like the Australian National Memorial and the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. On the banks of the Somme, Amiens (40 minutes) is known for its ‘hortillonnages’, waterside gardens that can be toured by boat. The 13th-century Cathédrale Notre-Dame is thought to be twice the size of its namesake in Paris, and the leafy Parc de la Hotoie is home to a compact zoo with giraffes, red pandas and flamingos. For a day at the seaside, head to the Bay of the Somme (one hour and 10 minutes), with sandy beaches like Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. The Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme is a heritage railway track linking Le Crotoy to Cayeux-sur-Mer and travelling past marshes and beach huts, while Pointe du Hourdel is home to a seal colony.
