You might just gather from the name that this is an eco-friendly site in a scenic green location. But peruse the pics to see just how rural and green the Breton glampsite of Ecolodge La Belle Verte is… in a setting of meadow and apple trees, woodland and farmland, on a carefully managed hectare in the Ille-et-Villaine countryside just under an hour east of Rennes. The eco credentials here are all around the site, from solar power generation and a wood pellet boiler, to low consumption appliances and water saved where possible. This is a wildlife and nature haven too, where the team have added a garden, a botanical trail, a green with a mini farm and a vegetable garden where guests can pick herbs. Nature workshops run regularly on site, hiking trails meander from the green and bikes are available to use free on request. And there’s plenty of wellbeing to be had too... Yoga, massages and cooking classes (vegetarian, gluten free and lactose free) are also on site, along with a Nordic bath to hire for steamy soaks; just book the day before. Guests can also avail of the catering service to have meals delivered directly to their accommodation: gluten-free and lactose-free diet are welcome, or you can order organic, local and vegetarian meals or charcuterie plates. (Again, please ensure you order the day before.) Ecolodge La Belle Verte is five minutes’ drive from the village of Saint-M'Hervé, 10 minutes’ drive north of Haute-Vilaine lake in the Vilaine valley. If you’re arriving from urban lands for a rural break, Fougères is 25 minutes’ drive away, Rennes 55 minutes and Paris is about three hours and 10 minutes by car or train.

Delve into French history nearby with a look at Vitré, 15 minutes’ drive from the site near the border with Normandy. As one of France’s designated ville d'art et d'histoire or Town of Art and History, Vitré has stacks to see including the 11th-century Château de Vitré, the 17th-century Château-Marie, Rochers-Sévigné Castle and many medieval streets and half-timbered houses. The same distance to the north, Fougères should also be on your sightseeing itinerary, for its famed medieval stronghold the Château de Fougères, one of the biggest medieval fortresses in Europe. The castle has 13 towers, a few of which are open to visitors – look out while there for the donkeys grazing in the castle courtyard... Kids making noises of revolt ? Theme park Cobac Parc is an hour and 15 minutes’ drive away, as is the zoo at Château de Bourbansais. Heading towards the coast, Saint-Malo is an hour and a half away – or drive for an hour and 10 minutes instead to reach the world-famed sight of Mont Saint-Michel.
