  • Small, well-equipped glamping site 20 minutes' drive from Vichy
  • L’Allée des Géants 35 minutes’ drive; Parc Mirabel an hour
  • Workshops, massages, play area and communal kitchen on site
Will your holiday be all about hiking in the forest, visiting important historic sites or just unwinding while you take in the spectacular panoramic views of the Bourbonnaise Mountains (maybe with a glass of wine in hand)? Well, good news: at Sous les toiles de PauTiLou, you won’t have to face that choice, because you can have it all. Not only that: this intimate site 20 minutes' drive from the historic city of Vichy has your glamping needs sorted, with large bell tents that each accommodate up to four people (in one double bed and two single beds). Note that, although bed linen and blankets are provided, nights can be pretty cool in this mountainous area of central France, and there is no heating in the tents, so be sure to pack your flannel PJs. Your sleeping quarters also come with storage units and lamps, plus a private composting toilet adjoining the tent. Facilities shared with the other guests include an amenities block with showers and sinks, and a kitchen with communal fridge freezer, two-burner gas hob, microwave and coffee maker, plus the necessary equipment (crockery, cutlery, pans and utensils) to create and serve your meals. (The nearest shop is in Nizerolles, a 15-minute drive away.) While the kids tire themselves out in the play area, you can learn a thing or two on the workshops and activities run by owners Paula and Thierry. These include things like making your own natural cosmetics, orienteering and guided walks in the surrounding hills, plus massages and reflexology treatments (you'll need to book ahead, so drop them a line once you've booked to see what's on).

Local attractions

A UNESCO World Heritage site on account of its spa heritage, Vichy (20 minutes' drive) has several well-maintained parks stretching along the banks of the Allier. Other riverside attractions include Beach Celestine, with a roped-off area for swimming, and the Aloha Parc Vichy inflatable adventure course. The Vichy Opera House is where the state of Vichy France was created in 1940. For a spot of forest bathing, head to L’Allée des Géants (35 minutes’ drive), which translates as the Alley of the Giants (also known as the Witches’ Path due to its somewhat spooky nature). Walking trails of varying lengths snake among gnarled centuries-old, moss-covered beech trees. On the outskirts of Riom, Parc Mirabel (an hour) is an amusement park with treetop adventure courses and bouncy, inflatable structures. Younger kids might enjoy feeding the rabbits or ‘splashing’ around in the ball pit; meanwhile, the entire family can play a round of miniature golf. Le Pal (55 minutes) has rollercoasters, rhinos and other wild animals (what a combination, indeed). Vulcania (an hour and 20 minutes) also has a tremendous number of rides, plus science workshops and views of Puy de Dôme.
