  • Dog-friendly site five minutes' drive from Sainte-Livrade-sur-Lot
  • Garden of Lilies 10 minutes’ drive; Walygator Sud-Ouest 45 minutes
  • Heated swimming pool and pétanque court; showers and communal fridge
Chilling in the French countryside, taking riverside walks with your dog and playing the odd gentle game of pétanque: they sound like essential ingredients for a fine holiday, right? If you’re dreaming of such a thing, Camping Le Chêne delivers – and how. This peaceful site less than one kilometre from the village of Saint-Étienne-de-Fougères (10 minutes’ walk), in the south-western Lot-et-Garonne department, sits in the middle of corn fields and plum groves. There is a communal fridge on site to store milk and other essentials, and freshly baked baguettes for breakfast (or lunch) can be sourced from the boulangeries in Sainte-Livrade-sur-Lot, a five-minute drive away across the river Lot. After eating, you might want to relax under the gazebo by the heated outdoor pool (open from early April to late October, and shared with the site owners), head to the pétanque court or have a game of table tennis. Fancy something more active? You can stroll or cycle along the banks of the Lot to the Cascade de Casseneuil waterfall (an hour and a half on foot, 25 minutes by bike), where you can refuel with a picnic in the shade of tall trees. Or head to Castelmoron-sur-Lot (10 minutes’ drive), where you can hire a canoe for an excursion along the river. Back at the site, you’ll have access to a washing machine and showers (plus toilets) to prepare for a soirée of dining and wining in one of the nearby villages. The region is known for its gastronomy, which relies heavily on foie gras and locally-grown fruit and vegetables, including the famed Agen prunes.

Electric optional grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I felt like I was sleeping in a forest. This site is pretty much someone’s garden. There is a lot of land surrounding a beautiful house, pool, and pool-house. It is very basic, but it was very secure, as the whole property is surrounded by a fence and gates. The woman was lovely, funny, and very helpful.

Disliked: All of the pine cones on the floor! Plus the tent pitches aren’t on level ground, so it took a while to find the best spot.

Local attractions

Said to have inspired Claude Monet to recreate a similar garden at his home in Giverny (not to mention hundreds of artworks), the Garden of Lilies at Temple-sur-Lot (10 minutes’ drive) has displays of local and tropical water lilies (some hailing from as far away as the Amazonian rainforest), plus lotuses. Want to learn all about the much-celebrated local prunes? At the Ferme et Musée du Pruneau (20 minutes), informative displays illustrate the history of this humble fruit. And when you’re done learning, you can hit the gift shop and buy all sorts of prune-related offerings. Among the thrill rides at Walygator Sud-Ouest (45 minutes) are the Boomerang roller coaster and a huge drop tower with spectacular views from the top. There are also gentler amusements for young children (including a water maze), plus sea lion shows.
