Searching for that right spot in the Médoc? If lots of time spent in the water is high up on your wish-list, Gironde site Camping L’Oree Du Bois might be just the right fit. Based in a wooded park half an hour’s walk from the shore of Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans and 20 minutes’ drive away from ocean beaches, you’ve got three choices for dips: the lake, the Atlantic or the site’s very own covered swimming pool (which is open between May and September). Take a stroll towards Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans, stopping off for a pizza takeaway or a bar if you fancy; the nearest lake beach is half an hour’s walk away. Hourtin Port, 10 minutes’ drive away, has all manner of watersports to choose from, and there are shops and restaurants in Hourtin, 20 minutes’ walk away. You might want to take an excursion to Bordeaux (an hour and 20 minutes’ drive), a cycling tour of the Médoc or track down more local lakes. However, if the ocean is calling you instead, set about surfing at Central Beach Hourtin (20 minutes), the closest beach to the site. Facilities at Camping l’Oree du Bois are just as splendid as the local attractions. As well as that pool, there's also bike hire and a kids' club – plus a bar serving up post-activity drinks and snacks. Other handy facilities include a food shop, a launderette, showers and toilets.

Local attractions

Lac d’Hourtin-Carcans is a good place to start with your outdoor activities – take the half-hour walk over there for a waterside wander, various watersports or to launch yourself into the lake in dramatic fashion from the inflatable obstacle course at Splash Park. Over on the other side of the lake, Plage de Piqueyrot (15 minutes’ drive) is a lovely spot for a stroll in the sand dunes and a swim. There’s more of all of this sort of thing close by at the beaches of Étang de Lacanau (35 minutes). Meanwhile, if you need something a little different for the kids, try the petting farm and tree-climbing activities at Animalia Parc (15 minutes) or head to Parc de l'Aventure Montalivet (half an hour) for archery, disc golf, go-karting and treetop trails, among other activities. If it’s a town day that takes your fancy, aim for Arès (45 minutes) to eat oysters while looking out at Arcachon Bay, or make a break for Bordeaux (an hour and 20 minutes) to sample wine, look for La Grosse Cloche, admire the gothic cathedral and stroll along the UNESCO-listed waterfront.
