  • Family forest lodges in Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park
  • Oradour-sur-Glane 50 minutes’ drive; Angoulême and Périgueux an hour
  • Two fishing ponds, swimming pool, pétanque and tennis courts
How does a peaceful escape among acres of untamed forest in Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park sound? Five minutes’ drive from the rural hamlet of Saint-Barthélemy-de-Bussière and surrounded by trees, the wooden lodges at Village de Gîtes Lapeyre provide simple accommodation for families keen for a rural Dordogne break but still wanting lots of stuff to do on site. And here you can indeed do lots of stuff. Go fishing at the two on-site ponds, challenge the kids to games of ping-pong and pétanque or have bit of a family contest on the tennis court. If that all sounds like too much hard work, bask in the sun around the swimming pool and then cool down with a refreshing dip. On top of all that, the site has direct access to several hiking and mountain biking trails for all levels of expertise, and if you’re visiting in autumn, you can mastermind foraging expeditions for mushrooms and chestnuts deep in the forest. And as for the lodges themselves… with options to sleep up to eight guests, they all have ensuite shower rooms plus spacious living and dining areas with a TV. There are separate bedrooms and kitchens fitted out with electric hobs, microwave, mini-refrigerator, cooking utensils, crockery and so on. Outside, overlooking all the forest greenery, is a private area with a barbecue, seating and sun loungers.

Local attractions

For days out in a triumvirate of historic cities, visit Limoges (55 minutes' drive) for its ornate half-timbered houses along Rue de Temple and fine ceramics in the Musée National Adrien Dubouché, or spend time admiring the stone carvings on the cathedral facade and walking the ramparts in Angoulême (an hour). Périgueux (an hour) has Roman remains at the Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum, an unusual cathedral with a spiky Romanesque-Byzantine design and an exceptional collection of medieval art in the Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie du Périgord. Culture taken care of, you can tour the slowly decaying ghost village of Oradour-sur-Glane (50 minutes), frozen in time following a massacre in World War II, and afterwards let loose on the rope courses and high wires in the Aventure Parc Lacs de Haute Charente (25 minutes). Go deep underground to see the stalactites and stalagmites in the Grottes du Quéroy (40 minutes), or take the looped nature walk through woodland to another wonder of nature – the massive granite boulder at Le Roc Branlant (15 minutes).
