  • Peaceful family-friendly site a half-hour drive from Périgueux
  • Lascaux International Center of Parietal Art 35 minutes’ drive
  • Dogs welcome; fishing pond, pétanque, restaurant and food shop on site
Whether you’re after a holiday where the most strenuous pursuit is finding a shady corner for your deckchair, an activity-filled break or a gastronomic tour of south-west France, La Maurinie is a top spot. This dog-friendly site is a half-hour drive from the town of Périgueux, in a peaceful corner of the Dordogne – look around and all you’ll see are large fields and forested hills. There’s a pond for keen anglers (and another one, the Étangs de la Daudie, is a 10-minute drive away), a pétanque court for family tournaments and bicycles for hire. Once you have your wheels, you might want to experience the Voie Verte, a flat 14-mile trail along the leafy banks of the Isle river (you can access it from Trélissac, a 20-minute drive from the site). Along the trail, you’ll come across several playgrounds (in case the kids need a break) and canoe launches – make a note of those for when you return sans bicycle and with kayak. There are also canoe hire places on the Vézère river, at Les Eyzies and Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère (half an hour), for example. Come the evening, you can fire up the barbecue (there’s a food shop on site) or let someone else take care of the cooking. The restaurant serves regional specialties (including charcuterie and cheeses) and locally produced wines, plus kids’ favourites such as pizzas and chips. A programme of organised evening entertainments keeps things lively and makes it easy to befriend your fellow guests. Amenities on site include a toilet block (with facilities for disabled guests), showers, a washing-up area and a launderette.

From the manager: Bonjour, Nous prenons note de votre mécontentement et sommes extrêmement surpris. Bonne continuation. Charles La Maurinie.

Liked: Clean quiet site. Hosts have not been there long (1 month) but have made a really good start on the place. By this time next year I expect it will be outstanding. The bar and restaurant looks really good but I did not have time to try it out, Toilets and showers were clean. Hot water was a small issue as it had broken down the day I arrived. Wifi near the house/ office

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Just outside Thenon, L’Appel de la Forêt (20 minutes’ drive) is a treetop adventure course with 11 trails made up of suspension bridges and ziplines, for all levels of ability (and courage). If you don’t fancy spending time in the trees, you can have a go at disc golf, or take a leisurely stroll along the many forested paths. Stretching on the banks of the Isle river, Périgueux has a long history that dates back millennia. Housed in a striking contemporary building designed by Jean Nouvel, VESUNNA is a museum displaying locally excavated Gallo-Roman artefacts. With its multitude of cupolas, the 12th-century cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a stop on the Camino de Santiago. The Lascaux International Center of Parietal Art (35 minutes) is a replica of the Lascaux Cave, renowned for its numerous drawings of bulls, deer and other animals. Aided by 3D screens and state-of-the-art technology, this immersive experience takes you up close and personal to those prehistoric artworks.
