General

  • Landscaped family park on the edge of St Lawrence Bay
  • Mersea Island views and rural setting
  • Spa pool, sauna, kids' clubs, pool and tavern

Waterside Holiday Park is a landscaped family park on the edge of St Lawrence Bay near Southminster in Essex, with views across to tidal Mersea Island, easy estuary access (you can go crabbing right at the bottom of the park) and proximity to Bradwell beach and the Essex coast. The seaside at Southend is about an hour’s drive away and the city of Colchester with its zoo within 11 miles.

Come here with the kids if you want a rurally Essex retreat but also plenty of things to do on tap: Waterside has kids’ clubs and an adventure playground to keep small folk entertained while their elders steam away in the spa pool and sauna.

All are alongside the Water’s Edge Tavern for live family entertainment and a small indoor pool, amusements and a pool table and darts to prevent restlessness on a rainy day. Entertainment and pool access are included in your pitch price.

A diner and takeaway are on site for meals and a fully-stocked convenience store is to hand for groceries. Other facilities include a launderette, covered dishwashing area, shower and loo block, hairdryer hire (essential) and a boat launching ramp – should you be so lucky...

Location and size of pitches, I would only stay again as my in laws have a place on site next door so its perfect to walk along the sea wall to see them. Next doors club house is beautiful as well.

    Disliked:

Toilets and showers need some TLC very shabby. had one look in the club house! Wow needs a major overhaul!!! But!! Even just taking down those awful drapes on the ceiling and tidying up that stage area would make a huge difference. Its almost like Park Dean cant be bothered with that site because its so far out! Such a shame as the location is great.

However the pitches are huge, with plenty of room for our giant tent and porch plus car and still loads if room for the kids to play.
The staff were excellent throughout, all going out of the way to make sure everyone enjoyed their time, very friendly and approachable. The kids activities were great.
The pool was clean and we'll maintained and we had problems booking in for swims, staff were happy for you to stay if the next session wasn't booked.
The good in the cafe was delicious and I was pleased to spot a 5 star hygiene rating.
The site was very quiet at night and in the mornings, meaning we had no problems sleeping.

    Disliked:

As other reviews have said the toilets and showers do need a bit of attention, they're definitely due an overhaul.

The mark up in the shop was a little high though, £2.25 for a bottle of coke.

There location was ok for what we needed.

    Disliked:

The site was very dirty. Toilets were extrememly smelly and badly looked after. One set of toilets had filth including what looked like excrement on the floor - which seemed to be there for a day or so. Toilets were not cleaned and toilet paper was not stocked for the 3 days we stayed there.

There were no power points at the showers/toilets to be able to use hair dryers etc. Or anywhere decent to actually get changed after a shower or in the toilets. No where to put your belongings.

The showers were filthy with left used razors in the cubicle. One of the men's shower had a can of cider left in it. The showers were hopeless and didn't work properly at all, having to stand and hold the button down to get any water. With the shower head falling off all the time.

The swimming pool was appalling. My husband and children used the pool - all commented on how dirty and damaged a lot of it was. And all felt extremely poorly after using the swimming pool.

No wifi where we were however we were not far from the reception etc.

There was very little for the children - the park was by a car park and quite far away so the children weren't able to spend a lot of time there. There was no where for parents to be near by them at the park.

There was no where to play for the children or play ball games. When they did play ball games in an empty pitch and elderly lady came and told them off.

Friendly staff, large pitches, Gorgeous views across the bay. The pub St Lawrence is right next door to the site, good atmosphere & the food is good & very reasonable.

    Disliked:

The pitch was 2/3rds mud & clay therefore only able to actually use 1/3 of our pitch. The showers / toilets were always dirty, no hot water, luke warm at best.
Tired site and in desperate need of some maintenance and crying out for investment,
Very remote, nearest supermarket (Morrisons) 1 hour drive away in Maldon.
No food available in the club house, there is a small cafe attached to the site shop but they close early, if you want a meal they have take away menus on the bar,

Local attractions

St Lawrence Bay, Mersea Island, the Blackwater Estuary and surroundings are an excellent part of Essex for all things nautical and seafoody.

Fishing, sailing, sightseeing, nature spotting and sampling Essex oysters in Maldon are in the area, and these here parts have been farmed for the pearly critters since our savvy ancestors first put traps down in the Tollesbury Flats during Anglo-Saxon times.

Pick up your own oyster haul at Maldon’s Promenade Park’s seafood bar, then take a hike to Hythe Bay to see the old Thames barges, a pull for visitors the country over.

If you’re island hopping, take a sail on one of the barges out to Osea Island, or wander around the estuary at low tide to walk out to Mersea and Northey.

Boat trips are available from the town around the Blackwater Estuary, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and National Nature Reserve teeming with water birds and varied habitats including reed beds and mudflats; an RSPB reserve is at the estuary’s Old Hall Marshes.

Natch there are all sorts of hooks around here for anglers too: five sea fishing boats operate out of Mersea for sea angling, four coarse lakes are at Heybridge in Maldon, and the areas inland and around Essex have several dozen fisheries from Colchester to Chelmsford to Romford.

If you’re going further afield, stop off at Maldon’s tourist information centre for discount tickets to Colchester Zoo and Southend’s Adventure Island and Sea Life Centre, a mere few of the options around Essex for family days out.

Southend, where the kids can run along the world’s longest pier, also has the Southend Cliff Railway to quiver at and a seafront that’s seven miles long. Other seaside days out are nearby in Leigh, further along the coast to Clacton-on-Sea and at Waterside’s nearest beach, Bradwell.

If it should drizzle somewhat, take the herd to the award-winning Old MacDonald's Farm in Brentwood, which has a huge indoor play area along with its petting farm and rollercoaster; the giant play frame at Maldon’s Monkey Puzzle at Madison Heights, or to splash about on the Jungle River ride at the Blackwater Leisure Centre.

Suffolk, Norfolk and the Broads are all accessible for day trips from Waterside too.
