  • Peaceful self-catering unit near Saffron Walden in rural north Essex
  • A 35-minute drive to IWM Duxford, and 40 minutes to Cambridge
  • Converted stable with kitchen, living space and private courtyard
A family-run bed-and-breakfast in a quiet rural corner of North Essex near the lovely market town of Saffron Walden, Great Sampford B&B is found up a small country lane on a former working farm – in fact, the bijou glamping accommodation here is in smartly refurbished stables. With its own kitchen, a powerful rainforest shower in the bathroom and a cosy bedroom with a double bed, the unit is completely accessible for anyone with limited mobility. For lazy days, there’s also a roomy lounge area and flat screen TV. Secure parking comes as part of the package, along with a small gravelled courtyard for catching vivid sunsets on clear evenings. A welcome package awaits, containing pretty much everything you need for a continental breakfast feast, but otherwise, you’re left to your own devices in the catering department. Perhaps you'd like to pick up foodie treats in Saffron Walden (20 minutes’ drive) to fix up a feast and enjoy a TV supper, or do a crawl of several pubs within 20 minutes’ drive. Great Sampford B&B is a handy overnighter if you’ve got an early (or late) flight from Stansted Airport (30 minutes’ drive), and it’s also easy to get there from London by train if you fancy a last-minute country getaway. For guests keen on hiking, Turpin’s Trail – named after the infamous highwayman – is five minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Staying at Great Sampford B&B puts you within easy reach of a couple of delightful towns. First of all, the hallowed university colleges and chapels, art galleries and indie shops of Cambridge (40 minutes’ drive) beckon, while medieval Saffron Walden (20 minutes) has a castle, museums and a mix of architectural styles from Tudor to Georgian. Fans of military history will probably want to spend time in hangars full of vintage planes and army vehicles at IWM Duxford (35 minutes), which started life as a base for Spitfire and Hurricane pilots in World War II. Train fanatics can get their fix while pottering around the Victorian station amid restored trains at East Anglian Railway Museum (45 minutes). If you love nothing better than touring other people’s grand houses, a clutch of stately mansions to poke around include Audley End House and Gardens (25 minutes), Hedingham Castle with its medieval watchtower and water gardens, and the recreated Norman village at Mountfitchet Castle (both half an hour).

Liked: Lovely Host with immaculate accommodation. The stay allowed us to spend a lovely evening in one of the three private terraces. The complimentary continental breakfast was superb, croissant, bread, jams, cereal all we could have asked for. Also orange juice and milk for coffee and teas all there ready to go. Would absolutely recommend to family and friends especially being so close to Cambridge where we spent a lovely day afterwards.
