  • Dog-friendly, off-grid camping in the peaceful village of Rayne, Essex
  • The Discovery Centre five minutes’ drive; Colchester Zoo 25 minutes
  • Eggs and veg sold on site; pubs and restaurants 10 minutes’ walk
When you’re after an old-time camping adventure, with no electric hook-ups and few facilities apart from toilets, Stocks Farm Camping in Essex might well fit the bill. This back-to-basics site is on a large and level field, shielded from the weather by mature trees. There is a pond at the edge of the camping field so please make sure any dogs are on a lead and children are supervised at all times for their safety. It goes without saying that you should clean up after your pets – and indeed yourselves – so leave the pitches exactly as you found them. Free-range eggs and seasonal vegetables are available to buy from the farm, and you can pick up whatever you need for barbecues (raise them off the grass please) from Braintree supermarkets (10 minutes’ drive). Alternatively, have a change of scenery in the evening and hotfoot it down to the pubs and restaurants in Rayne village (10 minutes’ walk). By day, stroll the Flitch Way (10 minutes) along a former railway line directly from the camping field, or treat the kids to a run around at Great Notley Country Park (20 minutes’ walk), with its multitude of climbing frames. Finally, if you’re looking for a bargain stopover before a flight from London Stansted, Stocks Farm Camping is only 20 minutes by car from the airport.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Well nothing but positive feed back from us. The site is beautiful, basic and relaxing. Just what we wanted. The grass was perfect. Short but padded felt like an expensive carpet in bare feet. Pitched where we wanted which we love, no fixed pitches. Beautiful meadow. Loved the walks nearby too. Coffee shops in walking distance. Shops and pubs very close and just eat deliver too ! The owners Katy and David were perfect. Friendly , chatty , helpful but respected your peace. Couldn’t fault anything. Toilets excellent and clean. The homemade fudge was a delicious bonus. Well done stocks farm keep up the excellent work. We will be repeat customers even if just to cuddle Sandy the most delicious Saint Bernard who lives with Katy and David.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We were lucky to find this new little off grid gem at the end of August when looking for a place to camp near friends. Good price, great beautiful location and Katy and David were super friendly and super helpful answering many questions before our arrival and being very accommodating and giving lots of good suggestions of places to visit while we were there. Would definitely recommend this place and would definitely go back there.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: What a brilliant site! Katy and David are fantastic hosts and made us feel very welcome even our pup! The sites super clean with the cleanest portaloos I’ve ever seen. There’s so much space we didn’t feel on top of other guests. We loved all the little touches they offer. It’s a little hidden gem and we can not wait to visit again next year. Thank you for having us

Disliked: Nothing to dislike apart from having to leave!!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Took the kids (4, 7 & 9) camping for 3 nights so my wife had some space to study. Such a lovely field with grass I'd be proud of in my garden. Very peaceful without electricity and nice to camp without caravans. Took the bikes and there was easy access to Flitch way and Great Notley Country Park which was an unexpected bonus. Katy & David are lovely hosts, popping round to check all is OK making all the campers feel welcome. So nice to be somewhere which isn't fussy in such beautiful surroundings. We will be back!

Disliked: Very slight road noise from the dual carriageway, but got used it very quickly and didn't notice it after the first night.

Liked: Very well tended camping ground. Friendly owners.

Disliked: Only one shower and washing facility.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you Roger for your review. We appreciate all feedback on our campsite in our very first year of hosting. As you say we have only one shower and one washing facility, this is why we advertise the site as back to basics which only includes cold water and toilets. The shower and washing up facilities are an addition but not included in your booking fee whereby we asked for a small donation when using the shower. Again we very much appreciate your feedback and hope to see you again in the future. Kind regards Katy and David
