Facilities were great, toilet block spotless and heated.
The Retreat. Nice clean place, pleasant staff. Not really our scene as a bit lacking in atmosphere. This site probably suits families with kids looking for a cheap stay in a clean tidy environment.
Great location for a wander round hastings.

    Disliked:

Difficult, not really our kind of site. It was very quiet which is what we were looking for, but it's just a big open space. Rather bland. Pitch was a bit narrow.

Expensive considering quality of services. Basic, cold washrooms and tiny showers where the shower makes the changing area wet. Probably ok in summer

A well kept mostly level pitch. Water and hook up close by. Toilet block clean and warm, well maintained. Plenty of dog bins. The restaurant/bar was very welcoming with good food. Didn't use the swimming pool but it looked good, will make sure we have our swimmers with us next time. Lovely location right on the edge of the nature reserve, great for walking the dogs.

    Disliked:

The showers, although very clean, the water was not very hot. They worked on a press button system, so your arm was under cold water whilst it was warming up and it never got very warm, coupled with the fact you had to keep pressing the button as the water didn't stay on.

Local attractions

It's about half an hour's highly scenic walk from the site to the East Hill Cliff Railway or East Hill Lift, for spectacular views from the funicular as it descends to Hastings Old Town. Wander around the Old Town's shops, cafés and pubs from here, then have a stroll along the prom a couple of minutes' walk away to the shingle beach and renovated Hastings Pier.

Shear Barn is on the edge of Hastings Country Park for miles' worth of walks and bike rides along its 853 acres of woodland, cliffs, grassland and meadow. Heaps of wildlife watching is around too, as the park is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the views from the clifftops are spectacular, of the coastline from Beachy Head to Dungeness and on clear days as far as Folkestone and the northern coast of France.

Other outdoor options nearby include cycling around the 13-mile network of tracks of Bedgebury Forest, four miles away, or windsurfing, rowing, canoeing, sailing and fishing for pike and trout at Bewl Water, within 45 minutes' drive. A mile-high sandstone crag to clamber is at Harrison's Rocks, around an hour's drive from the park.

For family days, wandering the caverns of A Smugglers Adventure at St Clements Caves is a hoot, or you could take them along to the Hastings seaside activities such as the world's biggest underground skate park, beachfront funfair and a miniature golf course. The Blue Reef Aquarium is also in the Old Town, less than a minute's walk from the famed Hastings fishing museum.
