  • North Yorkshire farm just outside the North York Moors National Park
  • Rievaulx Abbey and North Yorkshire coast within a half-hour drive
  • Farm eggs and meat available to buy; lifts offered to walking trails
If you like the idea of keeping your food miles low, you'll probably be rather pleased with what’s in store at Potto Grange Holidays, a North Yorkshire farm site 20 minutes' drive from Northallerton. This is a place where you can dine on Galloway beef or rare-breed lamb for dinner, then pick up farm-fresh eggs for breakfast – all produced right there on the farm. And if you like the idea of working up an appetite on a long walk or few, this location should suit you pretty well – it's just outside the North York Moors National Park and close to several long-distance trails including the Lyke Wake Walk, Cleveland Way and Coast to Coast Walk. The friendly folk on site will happily ferry you to/from the trails if you need. When you're travelling under your own steam, you’ll be able to visit places like Mount Grace Priory or Rievalux Abbey or get over to the North Yorkshire coast for a walk – all are within half an hour's drive. Day trips to York or Durham could be on the cards too, as both are within an hour's drive. Closer to home are the villages of Swainby and Hutton Rudby, both with pubs and shops where you can pick up extra bits to help cook your meals back at base. Barbecues are permitted at the farm, and it's surrounded by gorgeous rural views to gaze out over while you dine in the open air.

Honeysuckle shepherd's hut

Liked: Fabulous shepherd's hut in a quiet and peaceful location. It was cosy and warm with the log fire burning. It had everything we needed for our one night stay.It was close to excellent countryside walks in the Cleveland Hills. Fresh eggs and apples were a lovely touch.

Disliked: Would have liked to be able to charge my phone but couldn't find a socket.

Local attractions

A good pair of walking shoes is a handy thing to pack for a trip to this part of the world, whether you're planning a long trek on one of the main trails or just a gentle amble around one of the local attractions. The gardens at Mount Grace Priory (15 minutes' drive) make for a lovely stroll, as do the natural landscapes around places like Scugdale (15 minutes) or The Wainstones (25 minutes). Heading further into the North York Moors National Park gets you to places like Byland Abbey (half an hour), Rievaulx Abbey (half an hour) and Goathland Station (55 minutes), where you can see one of the Harry Potter filming locations or board one of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s steam trains to see some more of the scenery. Over at the coast, there’s a sandy beach, surfing and a cliff tramway in Saltburn-by-the-Sea (half an hour), or you could carry on to Whitby (50 minutes) to see the dramatic abbey, climb the 199 Steps and visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum.
