There’s no mistaking you’re in Yorkshire when you stay at Oakwood Luxury Glamping – set in countryside between York (45 minutes’ drive) and Beverley (20 minutes) – for all the nifty little pods on the site are named after area’s best-known rivers, including the Aire, Nidd and Ribble. As well as picnic chairs and tables on private decking, each pod has the latest in smart heating, promising a comfy stay at all times of year. Sleeping areas are kitted out with a king-size bed, reading lights, sockets and USB charging facilities, and each ensuite has a heated towel rail and constant hot water for the shower. Snug Italian sofas cosy up every lounge space, along with a bluetooth sound system and Smart TV, and handmade kitchens come with a solid worktop, two-ring halogen hob, combi oven, fridge/freezer and all the essentials that make self-catering stress free. Little treats that go the extra mile await you too: coffee makers, fluffy robes, slippers, luxury toiletries, hairdryers and a vanity area. The glampsite is close to several swanky wedding venues, and each wardrobe has long-drop hanging space in case you’ve brought your best togs and need to keep them uncreased. If you really want to push the boat out, book breakfast hampers or celebration drinks packages to be in your pod upon arrival.

Local attractions

Spend a day in Beverley (20 minutes’ drive) to do justice to the spectacular Early English and Gothic architecture of the minister and the intricately painted Ceiling of Stars and Constellations in 16th-century St Mary’s Church. If you’re there on a warm day, take a walk on Westwood Common or follow the Hudson Way Rail Trail along a former railway line towards York. As well as its acclaimed National Railway Museum – star exhibits include the famed Flying Scotsman and bright-blue Mallard trains – York (40 minutes) has ninth-century dioramas in Jorvik Viking Centre and recreated Victorian streets at the Castle Museum. Step back further in time with strolls around the (partly) Roman walls, and be sure to take the free guided tour of York Minster before visiting the interactive Undercroft Museum to learn more about its backstory. If you’d like to venture further afield, the Royal Armouries Museum and upscale shopping in Leeds, lively beaches at Scarborough or Bridlington, and scenic hikes in the Howardian Hills National Landscape are all around an hour’s drive away from the glampsite.
