  • Friendly site in Limousin countryside, 5 mins' drive from Rochechouart
  • Next to a seven-hectare pond and close to the Dordogne river
  • Family-friendly with sports areas, pool, kids' club and games room
Watery types – this lush Limousin site is the very one for you. For the greenly lovely place of Camping de la Météorite, in the Haute-Vienne department a couple of kilometres from ancient Rochechouart, is close to the Dordogne and Charente rivers for days’ (weeks’) worth of adventures – and is right next to a pretty seven-hectare pond for fishing and waterside walks. As you’ll know if you’ve been there before (and if you haven’t, sort a stay forthwith), the Limousin is a gorgeous place for a lengthy outdoors hol, as it’s the most rural region in France. The department is swathed with waterways (it’s nicknamed the land of a thousand lakes), as well as spectacular fishing for trout and salmon from over 2,200 kilometres of riverbank and a dozen lakes open for angling all year round. Sailing and other watersports are easily sorted at the Dordogne and Charente rivers, and at the third Limousin river the Vienne. And in between your watery adventures? Start your days at this small and friendly site with bread and pastries delivered right to you, before sporty times at the badminton, basketball, tennis and pétanque courts while the kids check out the play area, games room, ping pong table and summer club for ages six to 10. Woodland walks are available as well as waterside: Camping de la Météorite is secludedly surrounded by oak trees. A pool is also on site if you can’t fathom leaving the water for any time; after that, join in with the entertainment arranged in July and August, or sizzle dinner up on the communal barbecues using supplies from the small grocery shop or in town at Rochechouart. Camping de la Météorite also has a launderette, and modern showers and toilets suitable for disabled guests.

Local attractions

After days on and around the nearby pond and rivers, make your way to a sightseeing day in Rochechouart, an ancient and handsome town with fortified walls set in green countryside of woodland, meadows and gorges. There’s quite a bit to see and do in town: snap a selfie at the famed twisted bell tower for starters, then arrange more pics at the 10th-century castle, home to the museum of contemporary art and the multimedia library. Rochechouart’s Espace Météorite art and astronomy space (the town is in the site of a meteorite crater) has exhibitions and events throughout the year. A couple of hiking trails lead from town: the 14.5-kilometre Meteorite Trail leaving from Castle Square, and the 12.8-kilometre Charente path starting near Espace Météorite. Geocaching is also available in the town and its surrounds – ask for details at the Rochechouart tourist office – and cycling, horse riding, golf and wild swimming are within easy reach. Finally, the Camping de la Météorite team thoroughly recommends a thorough investigation of Limousin markets and local produce/specialities, such as bréjaude, macarons, tourtières, clafoutis, foie gras… better schedule at least one day on those local hiking trails…
