  • Stay on a scenic old farmstead among apple trees and green fields
  • Less than an hour from D-Day beaches and the Bayeux tapestry museum
  • Restaurant serving snacks and dinners, and French bar
Seeking hols that bring a taste of history, culture and local delicacies? Make immediate tracks for Camping Sous Les Étoiles Normandie – a family- and dog-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Normandy village of Saint-Martin-des-Besaces – where all of that combines for a sweet stay. This family-run and English-speaking site is well placed for explores in past and present: it’s about 45 minutes from the hikes, bikes, paths and trails (not to mention châteaux) of the Regional Nature Park of Normandie-Maine, and less than an hour from the museums and memorials of the D-Day beaches Utah, Omaha, Gold, Sword and Juno. While out and about, sampling the local wares is an absolute must; this area is renowned for its cheese, but the real star of the show is calvados, the region’s apple and pear brandy. Luckily, the site is about 40 minutes from a handful of distilleries, and there are a couple of cideries nearby for good measure. When site days are needed, there’s plenty to entice. An old farmstead, there are lots of green spaces here to lounge around on while kids play, and apple trees dotted around to inspire thoughts of (more) calvados and cider – nip over to the on-site bar for a sip, and nab a bite for dinner in the Cow Shed.

Liked: Nice large site with roomy pitches. Very clean shower and toilet block. Small games room also. Very pleasant staff. We had a fully serviced pitch with everything nearby. The electrics are a 3 pin type (as in UK) so no adaptor needed. WI-FI was faultless. Rural setting but within striking distance of a small village. Even the larger supermarkets are within a 15 minute drive. Would definetely recommend.

Liked: Welcome was excellent and local information was given in the form of a leaflet. The campsite itself is very well laid out and water is available every 2 pitches, a real bonus. The facilities were spotless and showers were as hot as required. No automatic shut off of the water either. We only stayed one night but there is a washing machine and dryer available as well as cooking facilities for campers and an undercover seating area. There is also a games room with pool table and darts and a massive selection of books. We were here for an overnight stop but will definitely be returning in the future. The owners were very understanding when our car wouldn't start and were happy for us to remain on site until the problem was resolved.

Liked: We were very fortunate in our choice of this site for a six-night stay in Normandy. To be more precise, it was probably the best we have visited in our four years of caravanning. The owners and their staff were most welcoming, and helpful in imparting local knowledge and advice. There was a good choice of spacious pitches, with boundary hedges offering some much-needed shade. The top-of-the-range shower block and the site generally were kept very clean. We enjoyed use of the attractive bar and can certainly recommend the house white.

Liked: Loved Everything about this site, the large pitches were well maintained, and sympathetic to wildlife. The facilities were immaculate, always clean and the quality of the showers were excellent. The campsite also offers food and a bar and coffee area, with a great choice of local cider, wine and draught pilsners. The food is excellent and cooked to order so always served hot and by friendly hard working staff. Dawn and Steve work hard to make your stay with them a great experience and are so friendly and helpful. Would recommend booking as they have the full site sign up even mid September! We had a wonderful holiday, we pitched our tent and stayed for two weeks as we needed to rest and stop, the area is lovely and most places of interest are within an hours drive. The village bakery is fab with some lovely sweet treats along with artisan breads. We visited Mont Saint Michel which was beautiful but extremely busy so go early, we went to the landing beaches and to Bayeux which is only 35/40 mins away, and the tapestry is worth a visit. The site is very dog friendly but dog owners are respectful, we took our little dog and he was made very welcome.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing!

Local attractions

Start with a visit to Saint-Martin-des-Besace’s Musée 44 La Percée du Bocage (a 10-minute walk), dedicated to the allies’ liberation of Normandy, then get a slow-paced feel for the region on horseback with a tour from one of the stables within 10 minutes’ drive. More high-octane pursuits beckon 15 minutes away at the partially demolished Viaduc de la Souleuvre, where catapulting off towering objects (with bungee-cord firmly attached) is encouraged, and at Parc Festyland themepark on the outskirts of Caen, 40 minutes from base. Caen is a top spot for an urban day or two, with abbeys, memorials, museums, châteaux, gardens and (of course) shops to traipse around – but those in need of scenic vistas might do better to turn their sights to the coast, where the spectacular famed Mont Saint-Michel towers above the sea. History buffs left wanting more after trips to the beaches of D-Day can dedicate a day to the town of Bayeux, where the 70-metre Bayeux tapestry is on display depicting the story of William the Conqueror, and the Baron Gérard art museum adds to the cultural experience. Within 15 minutes, those whose passions lie in the open air can spend days whizzing along ziplines and poking around treetops at Accrobranche Mayya, and budding zoologists can get their fix among the white lions, Siberian tigers and red cat-bears – that’s red pandas – at Zoo de Jurques.
