  • Dog-friendly site surrounded by the peaceful Dorset countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Longleat; an hour from the Jurassic Coast
  • Fishing lake on site; plenty of restaurants, shops and pubs nearby
Crack into the Dorset countryside and wind down with lake views at Shaftesbury Country Touring Park. From cruising down countryside trails to taking day trips down to the Jurassic Coast (an hour’s drive south), this friendly 19-acre rural site is well-positioned for families, including their dogs, to indulge in the outdoors… With a fishing lake on site, you might be able to master your fishing skills… or show off, if you’ve already got some experience under your belt. There’s plenty to keep guests occupied off site too, as the site is five minutes’ drive from Shaftesbury, a market town home to the cute Gold Hill, a famed site paved with ancient cobbles. Shaftesbury has ample cafés, restaurants and pubs where you can fill up on different types of food (or beer, if that’s on your mind). Handily, there’s a well-stocked licensed mini market on site, and a larger supermarket in town in case you need to stock up on more extensive supplies. Other amenities on site include an amenities block and a launderette to help keep you looking your best whether you're off for a day of animal-spotting at Longleat’s safari park, half an hour’s drive away, or perhaps trying to unravel the mystery of Stonehenge, 45 minutes’ drive away.

Ramblers' Retreat camping pod

Liked: Camped here last year & loved it. Decided to book the ramblers retreat this year & when we arrived we’d been upgraded to the little lodge & again loved it. The couple that run the site are lovely the lodge was lovely & very warm & clean with everything we needed.. Although the weather was overcast we still had a great weekend & will go back.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: We stayed over the Easter weekend, after silly amounts of rain and a waterlogged site the owners were incredibly accommodating helping us have the best time possible while we stayed, facilities were spot on, the field was lovely and fishing lake was a bonus. We visited the usual cheddar gorge, durdle door etc and the site was central to everything we wanted to do, and following the owners recommendation for all you can eat breakfast under 5 minutes away we were very chuffed both mornings, will 100% be coming back when we are next down south👌🏼

Ramblers' Retreat camping pod

Liked: * The camping pod is lovely, with nice little homely touches. There's a double sofa-bed (although not the most comfortable) and a much-welcomed TV and heater. For warmer weather, there's also a decking area with chairs and table. The camping pod was clean and welcoming. * The on-site toilets/shower are really clean and the showers are individual cubicles. * It's very close to Shaftesbury, which is a nice little place. Close to a nice park and skate park too. I'd recommend the nearby Tank Museum and Haynes Motor Museum for day-trips. Not much within walking distance though, a car is needed.

Disliked: * I wouldn't say this site was particularly picturesque. It is literally behind a petrol station and the first thing you see is a huge row of wheelie bins - not the best first impression. There is also a mechanics/MOT garage and a caravan sales company, all looks a bit tatty. * There are lots of signs warning against fly-tipping and an instruction to phone the owner on arrival. I phoned and was greeted by 'Oh you're here already?' and then I was told to wait 5 minutes! The strange welcome continued as I was then told his wife usually dealt with camping pod check-ins rather than him. Although, it was the first weekend of the season and was very quiet due to wet weather-related cancellations. * The fishing lake (in all the pictures) is nowhere to be seen! Don't expect it to be near the camping pod, it is two fields away! It would be nice for the accommodation to be overlooking the lake. * It is on a busy main road so lots of traffic noise. * What was once the reception appears to be now boarded up and used for storage. * The camping pod is in the corner of a field, dominated by 6/7 semi-permanent caravans/trailers where construction/road workers appeared to be living. There is also a man living on the site in a winnebago. It does look/feel more like a trailer park. Although they were all friendly enough, it was rather off-putting as a lone female. * Would not recommend for families for the above reason and as there are limited facilities. * The camping pod is small - there is little room for anything else once the sofa bed has been pulled out. * The camping pod is advertised as 'with parking space' but that was not true, we were told NOT to park next to the camping pod as it was too muddy. Unfortunately the nearest parking spot was in the car park along the path and round the corner, not the most convenient way to unload/store items when travelling as a single mum with a young child! * There are not enough plug sockets, bearing in mind the lights/TV/heater need to be plugged in. You have to rotate electrical items - and don't forget to pack your own kettle. * The toilets/showers are not close! We had to walk past one closed and locked toilet block to get to the toilet block that was open. Although very nice, there are only a handful of toilets and a couple of showers, so there's probably quite a wait when busy.

From the manager: Good morning anonymous, WOW, that is the longest review we have ever had but thank you for taking the time out to write it as it must have taken up a lot of your time. So I will try and make my response brief. I agree with you but due to the bad weather our campsite is not as picturesque as we would like it to be at the moment. Firstly can I mention, it is stated on our website that when booking Ramblers Retreat " You have to bring everything you would normally bring for camping just not the tent", so sorry, we do not supply a kettle. We actually closed the campsite for the time you were here hence it was so quiet, due to the bad weather conditions but honoured your booking for the pod as not to disappoint and I believe you were told, after complaining, you could park next to the pod at your own risk of getting stuck in the wet ground. Oh and NOT one of our seasonal pitches, consisting of motorhomes and caravans belong to construction/road workers Unfortunately due to having a 30 acre site we cannot place everyone round the lake!, as much as we would like to. Yes, we are on a main road and the entrance is to the side of an Esso garage and may I add, with a very convenient licensed Londis Supermarket, but once you get through the main gates you have 30 acres to enjoy. The Winnebago you mentioned is parked there due to its size, we endeavour to cater for all sizes of units on our site. Unfortunately the much needed wheelie bins have to be put somewhere!! I could comment more but unfortunately have run out of time! You really should have come to us with any concerns you may have had while you were here and we would have endeavoured to resolve them. Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (six person)

Liked: Size of pitches, and the size of the field. Perfect for kids to run around. Also likes having the garage 2 mins walk for any extra we forgot to buy

Disliked: The cleanliness off the toilets and shower block. I know it's camping but it seemed as those only the floors were mopped, and the sinks weren't washed down. Sometimes a lot of noise at night, we heard arguing at times and swearing from the attached 'trailer park' on site.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Amy Thank you for your comments but we are a little confused reference the trailer Park as we don't have a trailer park on site. Are you sure you have reviewed the correct campsite. Also we are very surprised about the comments on the toilet/shower block as a lot of our reviews and feedback comment on the cleanliness of them. Local attractions

Take a detour into the animal world for a little while… there are several animal-orientated activities within reach of the site, including the family-friendly Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (45 minutes’ drive) for hands-on farm activities and the Bush Farm Bison Centre (15 minutes), home to bison and elk and woodland walks. On a bigger scale, Longleat (half an hour) has a drive-through safari packed with wild animals. However, it has more than just animals – there’s also an adventure park and over at Longleat House (35 minutes), you can ogle over an Elizabethan house through tours, exhibitions and walks around the formal and pleasure gardens. There are more trips into history at hand too, whether it’s inside Old Wardour Castle (20 minutes), Stourhead’s mansion and landscaped gardens (20 minutes) or Stonehenge (45 minutes). If you want energy-packed afternoons instead, the New Forest National Park (50 minutes) and its hiking and cycling trails may be worth the little longer drive. There are opportunities for watersports in Bournemouth (an hour) or a scenic coastal walk at Durdle Door (an hour) on the Jurassic Coast.
