Shaftesbury Country Touring Park: Road through the site

General

  • Dog-friendly site surrounded by the peaceful Dorset countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Longleat; an hour from the Jurassic Coast
  • Fishing lake on site; plenty of restaurants, shops and pubs nearby

Crack into the Dorset countryside and wind down with lake views at Shaftesbury Country Touring Park. From cruising down countryside trails to taking day trips down to the Jurassic Coast (an hour’s drive south), this friendly rural site is well-positioned for families, including their dogs, to indulge in the outdoors… simply roll up, pick a plot somewhere in the 19-acre field and settle in for a peaceful stay.

With a fishing lake on site, you might be able to master your fishing skills… or show off, if you’ve already got some experience under your belt. There’s plenty to keep guests occupied off site too, as the site is five minutes’ drive from Shaftesbury, a market town home to the cute Gold Hill, a famed site paved with ancient cobbles.

Shaftesbury has ample cafés, restaurants and pubs where you can fill up on different types of food (or beer, if that’s on your mind). Handily, there’s a large supermarket in the town too, in case you feel like taking something tasty back to the site with you.

On site, there’s an amenities block to help you brush up before a day of animal-spotting at Longleat’s safari park, half an hour’s drive away, or perhaps trying to unravel the mystery of Stonehenge, 45 minutes’ drive away. Aside from this, things are kept fairly basic, but there’s a chemical disposal point if you need it and a launderette where you can tend to any mucky clothes.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 10 or more people are not permitted.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

A cable measuring at least 25 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

The space and the large pitch settings. Spotlessly clean showers and toilets. Very friendly and helpful owners. Great base to explore from, easy to reach Shaftesbury, Sturminster Newtown etc. Very well maintained and clean site.

    Disliked:

The field we were in did not have a washing up area. However, it does look as though the site is having work done to improve the shower, toilet and washing up facilities .

Toilet and shower facilities, probably the most modern and clean I have experienced in many years of camping.
    Flat pitches
    Plenty of space
    Proximity to Shaftesbury
    Friendly and helpful management.

Quite a trek to the toilet/shower facilities depending on where your pitch is.
The A30 can generate quite a lot of noise.

Absolutely gorgeous site - very relaxed and beautiful! We were in the field where the lake is and loved it! Stunning views! The staff were fantastic - very friendly and super helpful.

    Disliked:

Elsan point had a temporary fix due to an issue which wasn’t great but no biggie - needs more showers / toilet facilities but again no massive issue - just some productive feedback

From the manager...

Hi Amy

Thank you for taking the time out to write us a review.
It has been a very strange 18 months and also having new management in May this year we didn't realise how successful the campsite would be.
We have taken note of the constructive feedback and will be adding a new toilet block and improving overall facilities next season.

Hope to see you all soon.

We absolutely love it here too.

Thanks Steph & Carl

    Disliked:

Only 2 toilets & showers in 1block fo whole site, no lighting either to mark gateway, pitches seem very close considering size of land

From the manager...

Hi Anon
We always welcome positive feedback.

There were actually 2 men's toilet, and showers, 2 ladies toilet and showers and one unisex toilet and shower.

Lighting is kept tp a minimum for obvious reasons.

Hook ups on Lakeview are positioned according to Camping and Caravanning Club guidelines.

On a bigger scale, Longleat (half an hour) has a drive-through safari packed with wild animals. However, it has more than just animals – there’s also an adventure park and over at Longleat House (35 minutes), you can ogle over an Elizabethan house through tours, exhibitions and walks around the formal and pleasure gardens.

There are more trips into history at hand too, whether it’s inside Old Wardour Castle (20 minutes), Stourhead’s mansion and landscaped gardens (20 minutes) or Stonehenge (45 minutes).

If you want energy-packed afternoons instead, the New Forest National Park (50 minutes) and its hiking and cycling trails may be worth the little longer drive. There are opportunities for watersports in Bournemouth (an hour) or a scenic coastal walk at Durdle Door (an hour) on the Jurassic Coast.
