Shaftesbury Country Touring Park: Reception and pitches

General

  • Dog-friendly site surrounded by the peaceful Dorset countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Longleat; an hour from the Jurassic Coast
  • Fishing lake on site; plenty of restaurants, shops and pubs nearby

Crack into the Dorset countryside and wind down with lake views at Shaftesbury Country Touring Park. From cruising down countryside trails to taking day trips down to the Jurassic Coast (an hour’s drive south), this friendly 19-acre rural site is well-positioned for families, including their dogs, to indulge in the outdoors…

With a fishing lake on site, you might be able to master your fishing skills… or show off, if you’ve already got some experience under your belt. There’s plenty to keep guests occupied off site too, as the site is five minutes’ drive from Shaftesbury, a market town home to the cute Gold Hill, a famed site paved with ancient cobbles.

Shaftesbury has ample cafés, restaurants and pubs where you can fill up on different types of food (or beer, if that’s on your mind). Handily, there’s a well-stocked licensed mini market on site, and a larger supermarket in town in case you need to stock up on more extensive supplies.

Other amenities on site include an amenities block and a launderette to help keep you looking your best whether you're off for a day of animal-spotting at Longleat’s safari park, half an hour’s drive away, or perhaps trying to unravel the mystery of Stonehenge, 45 minutes’ drive away.

What a lovely find, my son and partner are passionate fishermen which is why we decided to give this place a try. They have some beautiful fish and i think my partner lost count after catching about 50. While they are used to catching carp at 30lb+ they had a lot of fun float fishing and catching small ones. The pitch was clean and well maintained, the facilities were excellent with lovely hot showers and very clean. The town is only 5 minutes drive with a big Tesco and new Lidl store too

    Disliked:

The road can be a little noisy sometimes but you soon get used to it and it didn’t bother us. Maybe a small park would be good but not a necessity

From the manager...

Hi Natalie
Thank you for your great review and taking time out to put lots of photos on.
It's great to see fish been caught and see your son getting involved in the sport, tried to catch up with you today to say thank you for your message on Facebook too but unfortunately you had gone.
We look forward to seeing again soon

the owners were lovely, nothing was too much trouble. The site is huge and the facilities are perfect, both shower blocks are exceptionally clean and lovely and warm. Would highly recommend this site. My little boy (aged7) and I stayed in the ramblers retreat which is small but just right for a few days away, even has electricity inside it so make sure you pack your kettle for the important morning tea/ coffee.
There isn't a play area for the children but with plenty of land to explore and play frisbee etc which i think is far more important. All other campers on site where super friendly including the more permanent campers/caravaners.
Would recommend this site to anyone, and the ramblers retreat for any couple or single traveler for a few nights away, with out having to put up and take down a tent :)

We chose this site because of its convenient location near the Motcombe Turnpike Showground where we were attending a dog event. However, we would not hesitate to just book in again because we felt like time away.
It is in lovely countryside and we had views of the surrounding hills from our tent which was in a spacious pitch in the middle of the meadow. It was very relaxing watching the butterflies & dragonflies around us whilst chilling out.
We really appreciated the on site dog walking, around the meadow & lake area.
We found the toilet facilities were kept really clean & there was plenty of hot water when we had showers.

Access to the site was easy and staff welcome outstanding. We got shown around all of the amenities and whilst this occurred we were given an insight into what was on offer in the local area.
The pitch was a good size and site was in keeping with the beautiful countryside around it. All the amenities were clean and worked well. They appear to be adding/upgrading these, which will add to the lived experience.
We loved the relaxed nature of this site and will return as the surrounding area has so much to offer in beauty and town's have interesting events to visit and engage with.

    Disliked:

The site is situated alongside the A30 but this caused no issues noise-wise from our perspective.

Take a detour into the animal world for a little while… there are several animal-orientated activities within reach of the site, including the family-friendly Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (45 minutes’ drive) for hands-on farm activities and the Bush Farm Bison Centre (15 minutes), home to bison and elk and woodland walks.

On a bigger scale, Longleat (half an hour) has a drive-through safari packed with wild animals. However, it has more than just animals – there’s also an adventure park and over at Longleat House (35 minutes), you can ogle over an Elizabethan house through tours, exhibitions and walks around the formal and pleasure gardens.

There are more trips into history at hand too, whether it’s inside Old Wardour Castle (20 minutes), Stourhead’s mansion and landscaped gardens (20 minutes) or Stonehenge (45 minutes).

If you want energy-packed afternoons instead, the New Forest National Park (50 minutes) and its hiking and cycling trails may be worth the little longer drive. There are opportunities for watersports in Bournemouth (an hour) or a scenic coastal walk at Durdle Door (an hour) on the Jurassic Coast.
