General

  • Back to basics site on a family-run working farm
  • A 20-minute drive from Exmoor Zoo; half an hour from Combe Martin
  • Barbecues and firepits for hire; firewood available to purchase

Stitchpool Farm is a family-friendly spot on the edge of Exmoor where you'll have ample room for pitching up, kicking back and watching the workings of a family-run farm. The site is just to the south of the national park, so make sure to pack some sturdy footwear in case of cross-country walks. It's also an easy half-hour drive from some of Devon's best-loved beaches, so you might want to chuck in a pair of flip-flops while you're at it…

The philosophy behind this place is all about keeping things simple – the folk who keep Stitchpool Farm ticking over say that their goal is for you to have a wild-style, back-to-basics hol while still having access to essentials like loos, showers and running water. Apart from that, frills here are few and far between, with the focus on spending time outside and letting the fresh air wash your cares away.

These green and grassy surrounds are an inviting spot for a bit of outdoor dining, so make sure to plan for a barbecue evening at some point during your stay. Stitchpool Farm hires out barbecues and firepits by the night if you haven't brought your own; logs are also available for purchase. Need to stock up? The nearest supermarkets can be found in South Molton (15 minutes' drive), where there's also a twice-weekly market.

The Poltimore Arms, a kooky, off-grid pub with a piano-playing landlord and no mains electricity, is about two miles away from Stitchpool Farm.

-Great location and easy to visit lots of different beaches/ beautiful countryside.
    - Very laid back and room to play cricket / football.
    - Great sunsets
    - Ability to have fire pits meant the whole site looked fab at night.

    Disliked:

    - Toilets got blocked up regularly and could get pretty grim. It was always a lottery as to which loo you chose to go into!
    - One loud group of campers playing music/ swearing until midnight and somehow they always seemed to be awake the earliest too! Think the site needs to enforce a curfew.

Simplicity at it's finest, just a shame about others on site.01/09/2020

We liked the simplicity of it. 4 portaloo toilets, 2 portaloo showers and a tap with running water. The water was hot in the showers and the toilets and showers were deep cleaned twice a day.
The car parking area is kept separate so the children can run around in the field. The site is also clear of rubbish and the rubbish bags were collected daily.

    Disliked:

What ruined it for us was the other people on site and the lack of consideration they clearly have for others. As the site doesn't have any staff on site so to speak there is no management of noise. Large groups where music is playing late into the night, including an evening where I was woken up by music at 1am. We only stayed 2 out of our 3 nights booked.
Would love to come back again, but this does concern me.

Dog friendly, lots of space - no overcrowding at all, great location if you are wanting to explore north and south Devon like us.

    Disliked:

Not just the campsites fault but there was a lot of loud music and shouting going on from multiple groups camping in to the night - there doesn’t seem to be any sort of noise curfew like other campsites we’ve stayed in.

No running water to wash hands in the toilets.

Quite and picturesque. Facilities are basic but we knew that going in and they were perfectly adequate; we could wash and go to the toilet. They were well maintained and almost always clean. The family was very friendly and helpful and maintained the site well. We used it as a base to explore Devon and it was fantastic spot to do so.
