Leadstone Camping: Sea glimpse from some of the pitches

General

  • Old-fashioned site with modern facilities
  • A 10-minute walk to beach, dunes and nature reserve of Dawlish Warren

Old-style camping with new-style facilities, minutes from the Blue Flag Devon coastline and a 500-acre nature reserve stuffed with species of all sorts… you might want two weeks at least at Leadstone Camping in Dawlish Warren, ta.

This very friendly site, which has been around since 1974, one of those where the staff do their utmost to make sure guests have the best time possible: although this is traditional and uncommercialised camping, standards are modern, including a redeveloped amenities block with showers, toilets, free hot water to basins, a hairdryer, baby changing unit and an accessible room with shower, toilet and wash basin.

Leadstone also has a launderette, playground, washing-up facilities and water points in the pitching fields. For other supplies and nosh, a supermarket is a mile away, and anyone walking the 10 minutes to Dawlish Warren will find a pub serving lunch and evening meals handily placed along the way.

~This is a perfect place to stay for families . Good facilities. Such a lovely warm welcome.
Great position, 1 minute walk to local farm shop, 5 minutes walk to large pub serving good pub food. 7 minute walk to the beach, and lovely coastal path. Bus stop outside the campsite.
Pay for Wifi which is fair enough.

    Disliked:

It’s quite noisy with children but if you have children then they’ll make lots of friends.

Shower/toilet/washing facilities are excellent - some of the cleanest I've ever seen at a campsite. Staff are friendly and helpful and the site overall is quiet, clean and well maintained and felt very safe for young kids to be running around and playing up until dusk. The nearby farm shop is great and it's only a short walk to the beach and entertainment in Dawlish.

    Disliked:

On-site shop facilities are a little limited - the reception area sells essentials, but closes at 6.30pm which was frustrating when we needed change for the showers (20p for 5 mins). £5 per day for wifi is incredibly pricey too, considering there is no phone reception at all in the area.

Local attractions

Leadstone Camping's location makes it easy to get to most of Devon's attractions and it's simple to get from the site to wherever takes your fancy. Roads are relatively quiet for most of the year apart from in high season.

Dawlish Warren is a top place to be in Devon, partly for its safe clean beach and partly for its sand dunes leading onto 500-acre Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve, a hugely popular spot with birdwatchers and botanists.

On foot, walk the half mile to the Warren (it's a safe stroll and suitable for prams) or to the South West Coast Path within 10 minutes; it's also half a mile to the Exe Cycle Trail or the circular six-mile Dawlish Discovery Walk.

A mile away is the Exe estuary – another top local spot and a hit for fishing, hiking, biking and birdwatching – and the town of Dawlish itself is a mile and a half away: look out for the famous black swans. Also nearby is the harbour and two good pubs at Cockwood, two and a half miles away, and golf at Starcross before taking the ferry from here to Exmouth.

Shaldon, seven miles away, has another golf course and can be reached by ferry from the busy resort of Teignmouth.

For towns, take off to Exminster (nine miles; more golf), Torquay (10 miles), Newton Abbot (11 miles; racecourse and ancient market), Exeter (13 miles) and Paignton (13 miles; take the steam railway from here to Kingswear and Dartmouth).

Must see

  • Crealy Great Adventure Park (8.0 miles)
  • Exeter Cathedral - Church of Saint Peter (9.6 miles)
  • Living Coasts (9.9 miles)

National Trust

  • A la Ronde (3.9 miles)
  • Compton Castle (10.6 miles)
