  • Old-fashioned site with modern facilities
  • A 10-minute walk to beach, dunes and nature reserve of Dawlish Warren
  • Seven acres of grassland in a secluded setting
Old-style camping with new-style facilities, minutes from the Blue Flag Devon coastline and a 500-acre nature reserve stuffed with species of all sorts… you might want two weeks at least at Leadstone Camping (Leadstone Holiday Park) in Dawlish Warren, ta. This very friendly site, which has been around since 1974, one of those where the staff do their utmost to make sure guests have the best time possible: although this is traditional and uncommercialised camping, standards are modern, including a redeveloped amenities block with showers, toilets, free hot water to basins, a hairdryer, baby changing unit and an accessible room with shower, toilet and wash basin. Leadstone also has a launderette, playground, washing-up facilities and water points in the pitching fields. For other supplies and nosh, a supermarket is a mile away, and anyone walking the 10 minutes to Dawlish Warren will find a pub serving lunch and evening meals handily placed along the way.

Electric grass pitch (large, water hook-up)

Liked: Very warm welcome and follow up checks that we were all OK. Very clean shower/toilet block with plenty of hot water. Showers 20p which lasted fine for men, just about enough for the ladies! Great Forest Fungi farm café and Mount Pleasant Inn very nearby. Need to book these beforehand.

Disliked: It is more than 10 min walk to beach and is along the road which might be an issue with small children and lots of gear. Didn't affect us oldies in September just dog walking for coffee or pub.

Owl electric grass touring pitch (XL)

Liked: If you like quiet and basic this site is for you. It’s set out perfectly with different areas that are separated by trees and foliage so very private. The pitches are large, we had electric and water which was brilliant. We had a lovely, friendly welcome on arrival with lots of info given. The facilities although basic were perfectly adequate and always spotlessly clean. 10 minute walk to the Warren with its beach and shops. Pubs within walking distance and we took our bikes so particularly enjoyed the cycle path along the Exe estuary. The reception does sell a few basics and you can order morning pastries but there are plenty of shops nearby if you need more supplies. We booked for a week but ended up going home a couple of days early purely because we had an awful lot of rain which is not good with two dogs in tow but this was no reflection on the site at all…….would definitely visit again 😊

Disliked: Nothing.

Electric grass pitch (large, water hook-up)

Liked: Friendly welcome and escorted to our pitch and given information on the local area. It wasn't very busy so was lovely and peaceful and we had lots of space around our pitch. Easy access to water and the recycling and waste disposal is all in one place and very well organised. Short walk into Dawlish Warren with great rail links to nearby towns.

Disliked: Sloping pitches which even with chocks, didn't level us! Toilet facilities are clean but the showers which are unisex, we found quite dirty so only used once and showered in our van instead. There aren't very many so I'm the height of the season, these would be very busy.

Badger electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: Very Friendly wardens. Pitches divided by shrubs/trees. Good size pitch. Ours was flat. Easy walk along the front to Dawlish. Lovely garden centre next door. Bus stop outside camp gates. Little shop on site very useful. Facilities spotless.

Disliked: Showers need better extraction fan.

Local attractions

Leadstone Camping's location makes it easy to get to most of Devon's attractions and it's simple to get from the site to wherever takes your fancy. Roads are relatively quiet for most of the year apart from in high season. Dawlish Warren is a top place to be in Devon, partly for its safe clean beach and partly for its sand dunes leading onto 500-acre Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve, a hugely popular spot with birdwatchers and botanists. On foot, walk the half mile to the Warren (it's a safe stroll and suitable for prams) or to the South West Coast Path within 10 minutes; it's also half a mile to the Exe Cycle Trail or the circular six-mile Dawlish Discovery Walk. A mile away is the Exe estuary – another top local spot and a hit for fishing, hiking, biking and birdwatching – and the town of Dawlish itself is a mile and a half away: look out for the famous black swans. Also nearby is the harbour and two good pubs at Cockwood, two and a half miles away, and golf at Starcross before taking the ferry from here to Exmouth. Shaldon, seven miles away, has another golf course and can be reached by ferry from the busy resort of Teignmouth. For towns, take off to Exminster (nine miles; more golf), Torquay (10 miles), Newton Abbot (11 miles; racecourse and ancient market), Exeter (13 miles) and Paignton (13 miles; take the steam railway from here to Kingswear and Dartmouth).
