  • Family-friendly countryside site 30 minutes’ walk from Exmouth beach
  • A 25-minute drive from Crealy Adventure Park and 30 from Exeter
  • A few metres from a watersports centre and the river Exe
What do you picture when you think of your fantasy hols? If it’s beaches, stately houses and coastal walks through dinosaur country, then scurry over to Prattshayes Campsite (a green-field site 35 minutes’ drive from Exeter in Devon) to live your dream. Prattshayes Campsite is a top spot for venturing out around country and coast: three-mile-long Exmouth beach is a 30-minute walk from the site and it feeds into the Jurassic Coast at Orcombe Point 15 minutes down the beach. You can see more of the Devon coastline by picking up the 630-mile South West Coast Path at Exmouth beach, or following the Exe Estuary trail from Exmouth to Exeter and over to Dawlish. More of a water-based creature? Exmouth Watersports – where you can try out windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking on the river Exe – is very close, or you could stick to Exmouth beach for some swimming and basking. Back on site, reward yourself for all your hard work by firing up the barbecue, piling it high with calories (pick up supplies from Exmouth, less than 10 minutes’ drive away) and tuck in before heading over to the on-site bar to wash it all down. If you’d prefer to venture off site for your dinner, there are plenty of restaurants worth trying within 10 minutes.

Electric grass pitch (maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Friendly site, clean and modern facilities. Close to Exmouth and some lovely beaches.

Disliked: Small pitches close together and roped off so not easy to access with a touring van and no room for the car or an awning. Larger pitches were available in an adjacent field but weren't in use. We visited in October during a particularly wet spell and the pitches were waterlogged. We managed to get the van out using the mover and some helpful chaps from neighbouring pitches, but it was tricky.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch (maximum 8 metres)

Liked: New, sparkling clean toilets and showers. We were kept updated with information before our arrival. Location, a short walk from the beach and village.

Disliked: Pitch was on the small side and awkward to get into. Lack of facilities eg no laundry, no boot / dog washing point, not even water point on each pitch, just three points spread across the camp. No wifi. No reception (though we were told we could contact someone in a RV on camp). Only recycling facilities for glass, all the rest went into general waste. Large pot holes which became deep puddles with the rain. This was the most expensive campsite we have been to this week and it had the least facilities.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch (maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Great communication right from booking including directions and my pitch number. Lovely site with great facilities and reasonably priced. I had the smallest pitch and could of put my awning up next to my van if the weather required it but luckily the sun was out. The shower and toilet block are new and really well thought out. Probably the best ive ever seen at a campsite! I didn't use the shop & bar but nice to know it was there. Location is great and a nice walk down to Exmouth Beach.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Start your stay at Prattshayes Campsite by sticking close to site, as there’s loads nearby to keep you (and the whole fam) busy. Head into Exmouth for the Exmouth Museum, then venture a little further out for the World of Country Life park, Hawkridge Bird of Prey Centre, Bicton Park Botanical Gardens and the weird and wonderful 16-sided National Trust property A la Ronde, all less than 15 minutes’ drive from the site. A la Ronde whetting your appetite for history and stately piles? Fab Powderham Castle is just over half an hour from Prattshayes Campsite, and is open for tours and lots of special events. If that’s still not quite enough, the museums, underground passages and cathedral of Exeter (worth a visit for shopping and food too) are also a little over half an hour from the site. If you have kids in tow starting to protest about the walk down (centuries-old) memory lane, there’s oodles nearby to get them back on side… Start 20 minutes away with some go-karting to blow off steam, get their adrenaline pumping on the rides at Crealy Adventure Park (25 minutes), then pile them into the car for a jaunt to Paignton Zoo, less than an hour away.
