Prattshayes Campsite: Spacious secluded pitches

General

  • Family-friendly countryside site 30 minutes’ walk from Exmouth beach
  • A 25-minute drive from Crealy Adventure Park and 30 from Exeter
  • A few metres from a watersports centre and the river Exe

What do you picture when you think of your fantasy hols? If it’s beaches, stately houses and coastal walks through dinosaur country, then scurry over to Prattshayes Campsite (a green-field site 35 minutes’ drive from Exeter in Devon) to live your dream.

Prattshayes Campsite is a top spot for venturing out around country and coast: three-mile-long Exmouth beach is a 30-minute walk from the site and it feeds into the Jurassic Coast at Orcombe Point 15 minutes down the beach. You can see more of the Devon coastline by picking up the 630-mile South West Coast Path at Exmouth beach, or following the Exe Estuary trail from Exmouth to Exeter and over to Dawlish.

More of a water-based creature? Exmouth Watersports – where you can try out windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking on the river Exe – is very close, or you could stick to Exmouth beach for some swimming and basking.

Back on site, reward yourself for all your hard work by firing up the barbecue, piling it high with calories (pick up supplies from Exmouth, less than 10 minutes’ drive away) and tuck in before heading over to the on-site bar to wash it all down. If you’d prefer to venture off site for your dinner, there are plenty of restaurants worth trying within 10 minutes.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The bar is open between 01/04 and 31/10.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

We loved the large pitch - plenty of room to dry our wetsuits and store our boards. Facilities are clean.

    Disliked:

It would be nice for the toilet doors to open outwards - it's a tight squeeze to get out !!

From the manager...

Thanks for your great review, and we will be discussing the showers again this winter!

Location - beach and shops very short drive.
Well stocked shop on site with bar.
    Washing up facilities

    Disliked:

Toilets could do with being cleaned twice a day as floor open very wet, sink areas wet and toilet paper on floor.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. We're pleased you liked the site and enjoyed your stay.
The toilets are actually cleaned three times a day! I'm afraid that the volume of people going through and the way they are used, make it difficult to keep them clean at all times.

It's best to approach the site from the Littleham end of Maer Lane, rather than from the beach end, and avoid Castle Lane as it is very narrow.

Local attractions

Start your stay at Prattshayes Campsite by sticking close to site, as there’s loads nearby to keep you (and the whole fam) busy.

Head into Exmouth for the Exmouth Museum, then venture a little further out for the World of Country Life park, Hawkridge Bird of Prey Centre, Bicton Park Botanical Gardens and the weird and wonderful 16-sided National Trust property A la Ronde, all less than 15 minutes’ drive from the site.

A la Ronde whetting your appetite for history and stately piles? Fab Powderham Castle is just over half an hour from Prattshayes Campsite, and is open for tours and lots of special events. If that’s still not quite enough, the museums, underground passages and cathedral of Exeter (worth a visit for shopping and food too) are also a little over half an hour from the site.

If you have kids in tow starting to protest about the walk down (centuries-old) memory lane, there’s oodles nearby to get them back on side… Start 20 minutes away with some go-karting to blow off steam, get their adrenaline pumping on the rides at Crealy Adventure Park (25 minutes), then pile them into the car for a jaunt to Paignton Zoo, less than an hour away.

Must see

  • Crealy Great Adventure Park (10.2 kilometres)
  • Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site (12.0 kilometres)
  • Exeter Cathedral - Church of Saint Peter (15.7 kilometres)

National Trust

  • A la Ronde (3.3 kilometres)
