General

  • Modern stays in Dartmoor National Park
  • Just outside a moorland village and with woodland views
  • Dogs welcome

Had a baaaad week at work? Filled with shear determination to have a woolly good break overflowing with luxury and glamour? Flock to Dartmoor Shepherds Huts for a stay in Dartmoor National Park.

The huts here were added brandly new to the site in 2012 and are fully insulated with wool from the site’s own sheep, so remember to baaa thank you as you frolic past.

And, while they’re traditional in style, they're properly modern and up to date: timber-built, fully-equipped and sleeping up to four people (two in the double bed and another two on airbeds).

There are moor points here for the site’s location: pitches are in a peaceful Dartmoor valley with woodland views on one side and the Holy Brook on the other, just outside the moorland village of Holne and in an area packed with activities for all ages and tastes.

Naturally there are traditional Devonshire cream teas and the best of local produce around the area, but as it would be knit-picky to camp on Dartmoor and not cook over a traditional campfire too, all pitches have their own firepits and wood is available to buy from the friendly owners.

Dartmoor Shepherds Huts welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Please note

Large motorhomes not fit through the local narrow lanes. Please check road guides.

Location was beautiful. We enjoyed the pea ful surroundings and the local walks. Fire pit was great and warmed us up!

    Disliked:

The hut was freezing!!! No carpets or curtains up which may have made a difference. We really struggled with the cold in the evenings and it affected my chest. The shared facilities need looking at. Many locks were damaged. There was not heating or hot water in the hut and no lighting to lead the way to the shared facilities. While the location was amazing and we did enjoy our stay a few things could have made such a difference. There was only one bin in the toilets. The hut even tho was small it didnt really have a homely feel like the other hut we saw. There were no pictures up no curtains etc. We would return in the summer if we could stay in the other hut!

It was filthy, not taken care of. I dislocated my knee walking out of the hut as there was no mats to protect against the slippery decking. The entrance ended up damaging my front bumper as it was so awful.

Lovely lodge and stay but could use some friendly welcoming touches12/11/2019

  • Liked:

The lodge was lovely, decorated really well, had mostly everything you need for a stay and the log burner kept it really cosy and snug. It has lots of space inside. The fire was lit when we arrived which was really comfy to walk into.

    Disliked:

Although, I emailed ahead of time to ask a question and the response was prompt and polite and with instructions of where the lodge was....that was it. We received nothing on the day of arrival, nobody was around the farm to talk to and as it was out of season we didn't feel comfortable wandering the grounds as we didn't know where we could go. Having just read some of the reviews before writing mine, I am disappointed to learn we could have got to the moors through the campsite ans had a walk. We just turned up and the key was in the door (no name on the door like it says), it would have been nice to have had at least a short welcome letter in the lodge with some site info.
Also, there is zero phone signal in the lodge. Usually we wouldn't mind this so much but I am 8 months pregnant and had we been made aware of this then we probably would have stayed elsewhere in case of emergencies.

It was exactly what I expected calm and tranquil. The sound of the brook was so relaxing. The very tall trees all around made a great wind break.
The facilities were as described and the washing machine was free and worked fine.

    Disliked:

Only the weather really which was not under their control and a very scary moment when a herd of cows escaped (I assumed) into the field just as it was getting dark. I was concerned they had a few calves with them. They trashed my camp a bit as they walked around it. But no harm done.
I am hoping to come back next October!

Beautiful, remote location (although actually close to A38); wonderful Dartmoor walks; Holne is a nice village with a friendly pub. Campsite is rough-and-ready, but ideal for my purposes (hiking with dog) and the stream and fire-pits give it a lovely atmosphere. Quality of shepherd huts and the amenities block is fine.

    Disliked:

Car battery running the lights in the hut did run out halfway through, but I had a headtorch.

Directions

Leave the A38 at either Ashburton or Buckfastleigh junctions (depending which way you're coming from), and follow the signs for Holne.

When you arrive at Holne, pass the pub on your right and continue up a hill. The road takes a sharp right. Follow the road until you reach a sign for Michelcombe and take a left turn there. Then when you reach a small bridge, follow the sign to the bridle path. The farm is at the end of that road on the left. Take the lower gravelled track.

Large motorhomes not fit through the local narrow lanes. Please check road guides.

Local attractions

Food, glorious food...dive into the middle of the Westcountry’s larder to sample loads of local produce in the area’s restaurants and pubs: the Church House Inn a mile away at Holne shouldn’t prove to be too strenuous a walk back to base once you’ve munched your way through the fresh fish, Dartmoor venison or ploughman platters on offer.

If you decide that you need to walk off the Devonshire delights, you won’t be far away from plenty of scenic sights: there are heather-covered hills, wild Dartmoor ponies and walking routes all nearby, along with ancient archaeological landmarks such as stone circles, cairns and clapper bridges.

Climb a tor to have your breath taken away again by the scenery below: this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a mix of woodland, reservoir, valley and cave habitats.

A few miles further afield, start off at the High Moorland Visitor Centre to find out everything you need to know about Dartmoor’s history, wildlife and culture, then go on a history tour to take in Buckfast Abbey and Devon’s castles or take a wildlife trip to the area’s farm attractions Pennywell Farm, Totnes Rare Breed Farm and the Buckfast Butterflies and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary.

If you’ve had one too many cream teas (it’s easily done) and prefer to take in the scenery while sitting down, steam along to the South Devon Railway for valley views from Buckfastleigh to Totnes.

There are baleloads of family attractions in the area for you all to flock to: let the kids walk on water at the award-winning River Dart Country Park, ape the baboons and gorillas at Paignton Zoo or goggle at the sharks at the UK’s biggest aquarium, the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.
