General

  • Family-run park on a former stud farm and in a wildlife haven
  • Two and a half miles from the coast
  • Heated outdoor pool, bar, café, shop, takeaway and craft centre

Not able to decide which setting you prefer for holiday accommodation - walks in the countryside versus hoofing it to the nearest beach? Try a countryside break by the sea at friendly and family-run Whitehill Country Park.

On a former stud farm with converted stables and stone farm buildings, Whitehill is in a wildlife haven deep in the Devon countryside but only two and a half miles from the sands of the English Riviera: guaranteed, of course, to keep all sorts of neigh-sayers happy.

Nature lovers will champ at the bit to delve into the forty acres of hill, woodland and countryside around the park, where 130 species of flora and ferns can be recorded neatly in nature-spotting notebooks and where local wildlife abounds: look out for badgers, kestrels, pheasants and buzzards among others.

Meanwhile, beach boys and girls will find the nearest sands only a couple of miles away: it’s but a short drive to the beaches of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, and onto the 20 or so first-class beaches along this 22-mile stretch.

On site there's a heated outdoor pool, plenty of play areas for the small ones, walking trails and nature all around (the park is a David Bellamy Gold Award winner), a treasure trail to keep the little treasures occupied, letterboxing and all the cons of a mod site such as a takeaway, café, shop and supping alfresco while watching the sun go down from the terrace at the Hayloft bar.

Those who feel artistic can draw and paint in the indoor Shire Craft Centre; table tennis and a pool table are also on hand for indoor play.

We have just arrived back from a weeks caravan stay at Whitehill Country Park. Firstly i would like to say how impressed we were with the help and support from the staff. We had originally booked in thursday - thursday but had been keeping an eye on the weather. unfortunately it was meant to be stormy on the friday and again on the sunday. we contacted the site to find out whether we could change our dates. The staff were extremely helpful and we managed to push the break forward to the monday - saturday instead. The park itself is very well maintained and all the amenities were very clean, tidy and well placed. We had stayed here about 8 years ago when we were camping, so needless to say when we decided to go back to Devon for another break, this park was our first choice and we were not disappointed. We used the bar facilities too and had a meal and drinks there which was very pleasant. we have two beagles and used the dog walk area regularly throughout our stay. We would highly recommend this park to all age groups as there is something there for everyone, including an outdoor pool and jacuzzi. The park is very well located and within easy reach of other towns within Devon. We will definitely be back.

What a lovely place to stay, great for exploring the area. It was just a short drive to Paignton, Brixham etc. The staff was nice and help full a great bar area with good food at ok prices. Pool looked good but we did not go in but there was plenty that was. Would recommend and stay again. Ps if you get the bus to Paignton pleases be aware that they are only 2 hours apart and a taxi will cost you £10 one way.

Great facilities on site Swimming Pool, Bar, Cafe, Soft Play, evening entertainment, laundry services and Shop. Great toilet and shower facilities too.

    Disliked:

Poor customer services in Cafe one error was made in our order and no refund offered. Then another time we ordered off menu kids meal and gorgons (chicken pieces) on its own. The chicken pieces were off the take away menu so was not allowed to be eaten in the bar area like the kids meal? Also the kids meal couldn't be ordered as a take away. Even know all food is ordered and cooked from same kitchen area? Thought this was a poor service and was not very accommodating for my children's needs they just wanted pasta and chicken together for their meal. In the end we ordered the meal and take away as two separate orders, ate the meal inside and chicken pieces back at the tent, not ideal.

Local attractions

Whether you’re a meticulous planner or prefer to do things on the hoof, the sights and activities around this part of Devon will suit all tastes: Dartmoor National Park for active adventures, Totnes and Dartmouth towns for history, heritage and a sneaky bit of shopping, historic rivers meandering through the countryside, vintage villages, gorgeous walks and cracking coastline - and the 22 miles of beaches of the English Rivieria with seaside towns, watersports, fishing and boat trips...

The closest beach to Whitehill Country Park is award-winning and family-friendly Goodrington, between Torquay and Brixham and a mile south of Paignton. Once you’ve stretched out on the red sands or had a dip in the warm water (wakeboarding and windsurfing are popular here too if you’re feeling active), Goodrington has a few other options to check out: learn about the history of the English Riviera at the free Seashore Centre, pedal your way around the boating lake, or take the kids to the go-karting park or to the eight waterslides and pools of Splashdown at Quaywest.

Younger visitors will also go gaga over the inhabitants at nearby Pennywell Farm and the thousands of animals at Paignton Zoo, only a mile from Whitehill.

Living Coasts is a popular aquarium and less than five miles away in Torquay, and there's probably not a kid or big kid yet who hasn’t been enthralled by a puff along on the Paignton to Dartmouth Steam Railway: take the ferry ride afterwards to Dartmouth for a leisurely harbour cruise to Kingswear passing Dartmouth Castle, Britannia Royal Naval College and Greenway House.

Combined steam and cruise tickets are available and you can pick up children’s colouring sheets at the Kingswear station visitor centre so they can try and spot the local kingfishers, herons, seals and dolphins. Dizzier heights - and spectacular views - can be had at Torquay’s Babbacombe Cliff Railway from Babbacombe Downs to Oddicombe Beach.

For more timely pursuits, the spectacular and award-winning Kents Cavern has exhibitions, events and activities alongside its prehistoric caves; overground, there’s a woodland trail and fossil hunt, and the site is about ten minutes from yet another beach.

The English Riviera is of course also Agatha Christie territory – she used Kents Cavern as the setting for her novel The Man in the Brown Suit, and Greenway House was her holiday home (this was also where David Suchet as Poirot filmed his last scenes. Sniff.)

If you can’t make it to the annual Agatha Christie festival (tsk), amble along the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay with its ten landmarks including the Torquay Museum and Agatha Christie exhibition; eight of the sites have clues spelling out the name of a Christie character. Hint: it’s probably not ‘Miss Marple’.
