Dithering re which setting you prefer for holiday accommodation – walks in the countryside versus hoofing it to the nearest beach? Try a countryside break by the sea at friendly and family-run Whitehill Country Park. On a former stud farm with converted stables and stone farm buildings, Whitehill is in a wildlife haven deep in the Devon countryside but only two and a half miles from the sands of the English Riviera: guaranteed, of course, to keep all sorts of neigh-sayers happy. Nature fans will champ at the bit to delve into the 40 acres of hill, woodland and countryside around the park, where 130 species of flora and ferns can be recorded neatly in nature-spotting notebooks and where local wildlife abounds: look out for badgers, kestrels, pheasants and buzzards among others. Meanwhile, beach buoys and girls will find the nearest sands only a couple of miles away: it’s but a short drive to the beaches of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, and onto the 20 or so first-class beaches along this 22-mile stretch. On site there's a heated outdoor pool, plenty of play areas, walking trails, and nature all around; the park has won awards for its approach to wildlife management and conservation. Also around are letterboxing opps, a treasure trail to keep the little treasures occupied, and all the cons of a mod site such as a takeaway, café, shop and supping alfresco while watching the sun go down from the terrace at the Hayloft bar. Those who feel artistic can draw and paint in the indoor Shire Craft Centre; table tennis and a pool table are also on hand for indoor play.

  • Reception is unmanned after 7 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time so that the team can provide information about your unit/site.

  • A cable measuring at least 15 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Vehicles

  • Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.
  • Use of the outdoor pool is free-of-charge; there is a small charge for use of the indoor pool, however. Please note that some of the pitches may have a gentle slope.

Liked Great well kept site. All facilities kept clean and serviceable. Quiet evenings to relax and reflect on the day.

Disliked Did not see anything that needed making better. Just keep doing what your doing well. Local bus service great for giving driver a rest.

Liked Lovely site well maintained, lots of excellent facilities.
The bus stop was a good find.
The footpaths were great.

Disliked More loos, we had quite a trek to them.
The restaurant was a bit disorganised e.g. a curry night but the very helpful team had to struggle to find out what was on offer.

Liked Good amount of facilities, which were of a good quality and very clean. Spotless loo/shower blocks! (And two pools, too - although we weren't there long enough to use them). Useful little shop.

We saw pheasants, rabbits and heard owls hooting not too far away.

There's a good bar that serves functional food.

Disliked Late night noise/annoyance from other site users. (I think they'd had too much to drink and it was about 1am). Not the fault of the owner, but annoying nonetheless and kept us awake.

As a veggie, I'd like a few more food options as they were a bit limited.

Liked Beautiful grounds with amazing trees. Loved the birdlife.
Nice cafe and bar. Showers and toilets were very bright and airy. It was quiet when we went at this time out of season.
Great that the bus stopped at the site with easy access to the seaside at Paignton. Also loved the walk down the the Mill Pond at Stoke Gabriel village.

Disliked Security lights were very bright affecting views of the night sky.

The closest beach to Whitehill Country Park is Goodrington, a mile south of Paignton.
