Scenic countryside setting

  • Family-run park on a former stud farm and in a wildlife haven
  • Two and a half miles from the coast
  • Heated outdoor pool, bar, café, shop, takeaway and craft centre
Dithering re which setting you prefer for holiday accommodation – walks in the countryside versus hoofing it to the nearest beach? Try a countryside break by the sea at friendly and family-run Whitehill Country Park. On a former stud farm with converted stables and stone farm buildings, Whitehill is in a wildlife haven deep in the Devon countryside but only two and a half miles from the sands of the English Riviera: guaranteed, of course, to keep all sorts of neigh-sayers happy. Nature fans will champ at the bit to delve into the 40 acres of hill, woodland and countryside around the park, where 130 species of flora and ferns can be recorded neatly in nature-spotting notebooks and where local wildlife abounds: look out for badgers, kestrels, pheasants and buzzards among others. Meanwhile, beach buoys and girls will find the nearest sands only a couple of miles away: it’s but a short drive to the beaches of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, and onto the 20 or so first-class beaches along this 22-mile stretch. On site there's a heated outdoor pool, plenty of play areas, walking trails, and nature all around; the park has won awards for its approach to wildlife management and conservation. Also around are letterboxing opps, a treasure trail to keep the little treasures occupied, and all the cons of a mod site such as a takeaway, café, shop and supping alfresco while watching the sun go down from the terrace at the Hayloft bar. Those who feel artistic can draw and paint in the indoor Shire Craft Centre; table tennis and a pool table are also on hand for indoor play.

What customers say

Great campsite, clean & tidy, with super friendly staff. Loved the modern, private showers. Pitches are roomy. Pools, bar & restaurant got high marks. Bus stop right at the door. A few noted a tight road in & spotty Wi-Fi, but most would definitely come back.

Liked The pitch size was ample for our air 400 tent. The toilets and showers were very clean, with lots of privacy.
The pit door pool was great, not sure it would be so inviting if it hadn’t been soo hot lately though 😅
The staff clearly enjoy working here as they are all super friendly and welcoming.

Disliked Not so much a dislike but could be improved really. The arcade area was lacking games to cover all ages, just my opinion really nothing bad to say about the park.

Liked Amazing amazing amazing. The whole park was 5*. The shower facilities were a home from home!

The kids loved every minute of the pools, from disco party to chilling in the sun. Just fantastic.

Would highly recommend, as close to Paignton with a bus service every few hours.

Liked Overall the site was fine, we stay on plot 172 which was lovely right at the bottom of the field which suited us.
The road into the site is not very good to say the least.
I was in a motorhome towing our smart car on a a-frame.
It is very narrow in places and some blind corners where you can't see oncoming traffic, it was difficult for us as we came face to face with oncoming traffic turning into the lane which the site is situated on, I had to reverse as much as I could which is impossible with a a-frame.
Once we was pitched up it was fine but if I knew how narrow the road was I would have never of booked or I would of unhooked the smart car beforehand

Disliked Road to sit is ridiculous

Liked This is a lovely place to stay, and the shower and toilets are really good.

Disliked Some areas the Wi-Fi doesn’t work. There is a “small” fee to use the indoor pool that only shows after I booked.

Liked Shower facilities were very clean excellent park facilities and great pitch location.

Disliked The park ranger brought down a family to my our pitch the morning we was leaving they had our pitch allocated to them after us but they arrived 10 minutes early so myself and my partner felt rushed to get off the sight not great experience and caused a very awkward situation. We had 10 minutes remaining before we was due off the site and was in the middle of packing our tent down and belongings up.

Local attractions

The sights and activities around this part of Devon will suit all tastes: Dartmoor for active adventures, Totnes and Dartmouth for history and heritage – and the 22 miles of the English Rivieria for beaches, watersports, fishing and boat trips. The closest beach to Whitehill Country Park is Goodrington, a mile south of Paignton. After you’ve stretched out on the red sands, there are a few other options to check out: learn about the history of the English Riviera at the free Seashore Centre, pedal your way around the boating lake, or take the kids to the waterslides and pools of Splashdown at Quaywest. The English Riviera is of course also Agatha Christie territory – Greenway House was her holiday home (also where David Suchet as Poirot filmed his last scenes. Sniff.) If you can’t make it to the annual Agatha Christie festival (tsk), amble along the 10 landmarks of the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay; eight of the sites have clues spelling out the name of a Christie character. Hint: it’s probably not ‘Miss Marple’.
