General

  • Countryside park among 500 acres of woodland and meadows
  • Woodland walks, nature trails, pool, riding centre and mini zoo
  • Five camping fields and five spacious amenities blocks

Life’s little stresses getting you down? Want to stow yourself away for a countryside break where everything is close to your pitch?

Come along to Combe Martin’s Stowford Farm Meadows in north Devon for a bit of de-stressing in a rural setting: the park is a mile from the main road down its own private drive and is a well-placed base from which to explore the best of Devon. You can even get your caravan fitted out or fixed up on site – or pick up another one at the caravan sales. Now that’s what we call de-stressing in style…

Set among 500 acres of Devon woodland and meadows, Stowford Farm Meadows is one of our ‘very large’ sites – but fear not if your tastes tend towards the more solitary, as the park is divided into five separate camping and caravan fields and feels like several small sites rolled into one.

And the overall size means there are heaps of facilities and activities for you to try your hand at, from cantering around on horseback with the help of the on-site riding centre, to driving the kids crazy with your swish moves at fun and crazy golf.

Looking for something a bit quieter? There are marked woodland walks into the wildlife-rich Bittadon Valley, with nature trails starting and finishing on site, or take the kids to play at Petorama, Stowford Farm Meadows’ undercover mini zoo. A heated indoor pool is available for a small extra charge.

All the essentials are well looked after too: there are five spacious amenity blocks, all with laundry facilities attached, disabled facilities, family bathroom and a licensed well-stocked shop with ATM.

For putting feet up or letting hair down, there are two bars (with evening entertainment in peak season), a smart coffee lounge with takeaway, and a licensed restaurant with event nights including hog roast and barbecues. Even the dog will de-stress here, with a friendly welcome and a spacious dog-walking area on site…

Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The indoor swimming pool is open between 30/03 and 31/10.

All pitches: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged £2.00 per person per session.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Our indoor soft play area for children (aged up to 9) is only open during school holidays.

You can only bring either a gazebo or an extra car but not both. Everything must fit within the pitch.

Great holiday if you pretend the staff aren't there. 20/08/2017

Nice, large site. Plenty to keep everyone busy. Nice food, good facilities. Unfortunately due to almost loosing our tent in the wind we had to pitch it at a different angle and right in the middle of the pitch, but no one seemed to mind (there is a certain place and direction you have to pitch).

    Disliked:

Some of the staff came across as rude; like they really didn't want to be there, especially 'wardens' hovering over you while washing up. The girl in the shop looked lethargic as she complained how bored she was. The petorama I thought would be a delight for my little one, but it would be more better described as a health and safety inspectors paradise. The facilities are good, and fairly priced considering how cheap the site is, but could do with some modernising.

The reception staff was lovely, warm and friendly, and made us feel very welcome on arrival, and the wash/WC facilities was also very clean and well kept, the location has always been a benifit to the site, the kids also enjoyed the play park, and the nature walk, also the pitches were very level and easy to peg the tent in the ground. unfortunately that's where it ends

    Disliked:

So this site is somewhere myself and my brother used to come too 20 years ago when we were kids, and thought it would be a great idea to pay a bit extra and visit stowford as we were aware that it got bigger and thought we would let our kids experience great times like we had had.. unfortunately this wasn't the case, and this is why...

The site has massively changed for the worst. They have expanded to quite a few more fields with hundreds more pitches yet, they have downgraded the arcade and put it into what used to be the snooker room, now what used to be an arcade full of games machines now has under 20 games machines...
The swimming pool has not changed in 20 years to accommodate the bigger volume of its guests,
The old barn was the biggest dissappointment for us.. when we were remembering the old barn was the main attraction on the site, where pretty much every person that was pitched on site went to the old barn on the night, it was always packed with people, the music was great with the disco for the kids every night. Oh and the bar there was always open every night of the week..

However now they have so so many more guests and a higher profit margin, they only open the old barn bar Friday night sat night and Sunday night, EVEN in the 6 weeks half term holiday, meaning it was just being used for small groups of teens, laughing and swearing quite loud, and as there was no staff present in the bar, the parents of the smaller children using the softplay had to constantly tell the older kids to stop swearing! Also the old barn was very dark and dingy and also very cold.. it was a shell of the bright lively place we remember. Also the stable bar is far too small to accommodate the whole park, we never managed to get a table once in the whole holiday (Monday-Thursday).

    The wifi never ever worked

We also didn't like the fact that you had to pay for everything from crazy golf to feeding their hamsters. I think it's crazy how they could charge so much for something so poor..

Directions

Leave the M5 at Exit 27, then follow the North Devon link road to Barnstaple, then take the A39 (for Lynton) through Barnstaple town centre. One mile from Barnstaple, turn left onto the B3230. Turn right at the garage at Lynton Cross, onto the A3123.

Stowford Farm Meadows is 1.5 miles on the right, down its own private drive.

Local attractions

The highlights of north Devon are a pebble throw away, with Combe Martin on the doorstep, the famous harbour and seafront of Ilfracombe a few miles away, and Woolacombe and Croyde Bay within a short drive (if you forget your wetsuit, the clever sorts at Stowford sell them in the on-site shop).

Take little monsters to the animatronic dinosaurs, train ride and 250 species of wildlife at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park where they can help feed the lions or have an experience with a bird of prey; they should also have a hoot at the Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre in nearby Exmoor National Park or getting up and personal with the inhabitants at Barnstaple’s Exmoor Zoo.

Not thrilling enough? Let them see stars at the Milky Way Adventure Park with the tallest rollercoaster in Devon, or whirl about the theme park and descend to the dungeon at Watermouth Castle.

There are plenty of relaxing options for calming frazzled nerves after a day on the rollercoasters: walking across the moors or having a Devon cream tea in one of the villages of Exmoor National Park, sea and lake fishing, golfing, or taking a boat trip to beautiful and peaceful Lundy Island, 12 miles off the coast in the Bristol Channel.

Nocturnally inclined? Bring binoculars or hire a telescope at the National Park centres for a spot of stargazing: Exmoor National Park was the first designated Dark Sky Reserve in Europe.

The cobbled streets of Clovelly are a popular Devon tourist spot, although not for the faint-hearted or unfit: the streets here are so steep that goods are delivered on sledges. The village has over 70 listed buildings and links to the South West Coast Path at its top.

For other day trips, North Devon’s shopping capital Barnstaple has shops to suit all tastes for wallet-emptying; pick up some tasty local produce at the historic Pannier Market.

Or indulge your sweet tooth at South Molton’s Quince Honey Farm, go south to see Devon’s most popular beauty spot Becky Falls or browse around the historical houses of Devon such as the National Trust’s Arlington Court.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (15.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (3.7 miles)
  • Heddon Valley (6.8 miles)
