  • Family-friendly farm site 10 minutes' drive from Newton Abbot
  • Within half an hour of beaches at Dawlish, Paignton and Teignmouth
  • Fishing lake and spotless amenities; pub within walking distance
Farm, fishing and forest – all these await for folks having a break at Haldon View Campsite. Those first two are right there on site: this secluded spot is on a farm that has its own fishing lake. And the forest? That’d be the mighty Haldon Forest, 3,500 acres of woodland a five-minute drive from the farm. If that’s not enough nature for you, Dartmoor National Park is 20 minutes in the other direction – and this nifty spot near Newton Abbot is within a half-hour drive of Exeter, Torquay and Teignmouth too. If you still need to work up an appetite before eats, a woodland walk runs from the site over a stream bridge and along a bridleway to a country pub. Friendly dogs are welcome to accompany you on this outing, as they are to join you on your Haldon View break. Facilities on site include a small play area and a utility room with washing-up sink and washing machine/tumble dryer. The shower and toilet block crops up time and again in the reviews with guests praising its sparkling cleanliness.

The Garden electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet field. Nice woodland walk. Lovely calm and friendly atmosphere on site. Clean and tidy site. Had a lovely pitch.

Disliked: No rubbish bins. Shower and toilet block was a little outdated. However kept clean.

The Garden electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was in a great location and had some nice features to cater for all comers including kitchen area, washing machine, swings for kids.

Disliked: It pains me to say it as it’s not the fault of the owners so apologies, but a particular family who we were pitched next to us spoilt our stay. There was no on-site management and therefore despite having ‘rules’, this family broke every single one on our first night. It was clear they had been there a number of weeks and from subsequent comments, clearly had frustrated others. They constantly used offensive language, were up past 22:00 curfew, and I don’t mind an hour or so extra of chatting but they were playing music and talking loudly and then decided to cook bacon at 01:30, right next to our tent. We ended up having to go out and ask them to be quiet at 02:00. They were quieter the next night but no apology. The site unfortunately didn’t look like the pictures. There were around 10-12 caravans which had clearly been there a while and lots of people who were living on site. It didn’t feel like a camp site. The facilities were out dated and broken in some cases but someone did come to fix a broken toilet door whilst we were there. We paid extra for a non-sloping pitch but the site is all slightly sloped so that needs updating on the description. It’s a tough time for all at the moment and we did visit at the end of the summer but the site has a lot of potential, it just needs some money spent on it to replace and freshen up the facilities.

The Garden non-electric grass tent pitch (sloping)

Liked: Small site in a great location for Gone Wild Festival where we were going for the day. Great communication from hosts in advance of our arrival. Swings for kids, picnic tables. Use of a kitchen and the freezer to freeze your freezer packs. Lots of kids on site for my daughter to play with. Plenty of washing facilities.

Disliked: The site is untended by the hosts it didn't feel very welcoming although the long term guests pointed us in the direction of everything we needed. There seem to be a lot of long-term occupants, so I felt as though I was staying in a community where I didn't know anyone but they all knew each other. Oddly, this made me feel less safe rather than more safe. Many of the kids on site seemed to have been there a long time and felt confident to take our things and wander off with them, and then refuse to give them back. Freezer badly needed defrosted and I couldn't shut the door properly. The bathrooms were full of spiders and huge wasps which may have been hornets. My daughter wouldn't go in there until I had caught and got rid of all the spiders in the ladies'. Couldn't get hot water in the shower, although finally managed a small amount of warm water when I switched to "eco" setting. Didn't bother with a shower the second day. The shower floor was covered in mud and grass so it was disgusting to come out of there with bare feet.

The Garden electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Location was great 👍

Disliked: Booked with the understanding of a flat pitch as we paid extra for it. And it was on a slope.. made the stay very uncomfortable.. mens toilet door hanging off. Showers were disgusting..would not mind be its definitely not as advertised on pitch up website..

The Garden non-electric grass tent pitch (sloping)

Liked: Small and quiet site, Excellent wash/ shower and toilet facilities with a very nice kitchen area with microwave. Very easy road links as just off dual carriageway and only a short (<30 mins) drive from Torquey that is lovely to visit and Paignton Zoo that is fantastic for the little ones. No car parking next to pitches so kids free to play, wheelbarrows provided to help get items from car to pitch but not a far walk even without wheelbarrow. Owner comes twice daily to clean the facilities and is very approachable.

Disliked: My only dislike was that your pitch is allocated to you and sent to you via text. (In fairness all pitches on site are roughly same size and on roughly same slope so it makes very little difference but I just prefer to pick where I pitch my tent).

The Garden electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic site with great staff management. The site doesn't allow cars at pitches which is great for kids of all ages to roam and play as they should be able to. Showers and toilets are great and kept clean. There's a covered area to wash up and a washing machine and tumble dryer that was a life saver. It was fantastic coming home with clean laundry and one less job to do! When it rains, there's a nice cabin to relax in with lighting and sofa. There's a fridge and freezer which is very helpful. The location is superb; you're away from the hustle and bustle but close enough that you're not spending loads of time in your car. There are plenty of supermarkets close by, you're spoilt for choice!

The Garden electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Clean toilets and pitches

Disliked: Despite the rules in this being a family friendly site two groups were drinking heavily into the night and taking other drugs. Another camper made a complaint, but the group were not ejected and on a later night one member of the group was threatening violence to the camper who had complained. This was at 3am and the aggressor was threatening to "Chop him up". I calmed him down a bit, but decided against staying longer as it didn't exactly feel safe.

From the manager: I'm very sorry that you had an unpleasant stay. The group you refer to were given a warning and behaved appropriately for a family site for the rest of their stay, I received no further complaints. The other incident was unrelated and totally unacceptable, they were told to leave immediately, which they did and I spoke to as many of the families on site as were around to apologise for any distress and to reassure them going forward, apologies if I didn't manage to speak to you. We expect and hope that everyone will behave respectfully but people are people and it's unfortunate that sometimes the mix of campers, very hot weather and a little too much drink can end badly and it's not possible for us to predict this. This kind of behaviour is certainly not typical of our site! Thank you for your feedback

The Garden electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Location as it was close to Teignmouth and Haldon Forrest.

Disliked: Showering and toilet facilities were very small, not enough room to comfortably shower my children, only one male and one female toilet and only one sink for washing/brushing teeth. Rest of the facilities were very basic, not great for prolonged stays in Devon.

Local attractions

Stack the bikes on the back of the car or chuck your boots in the boot for the five-minute drive to Haldon Forest, where there are marked-out trails for walkers and mountain bike riders, along with themed routes for the nippers (can you spot a Gruffalo as you go?) Hire bikes at the visitor centre if you’ve not brought your own, tour the forest on Segways or horse rides, or tackle the treetop trails at the Go Ape adventure park. If you prefer your fresh air with a salty tinge, head to one of the nearby beaches: Dawlish (15 minutes’ drive), Teignmouth (15 minutes) and Paignton (25 minutes) are all splendid sandy choices. If you pick Paignton it’s also worth scheduling in a bit of time to visit the town’s excellent zoo and/or the Splashdown waterpark. Folks with small people in tow will no doubt be chuffed to hear that there’s a lengthy list of family-friendly outings to be had around here: you’ll be within a half-hour drive of the Devon Bird of Prey Centre, Buckfast Butterfly Farm, Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary, Babbacombe Model Village and the prehistoric Kents Cavern, to name but a small handful.
