General

  • Secluded farm site 10 minutes' drive from Newton Abbot
  • Within half an hour of beaches at Dawlish, Paignton and Teignmouth
  • Fishing lake and spotless amenities; pub within walking distance

Farm, fishing and forest – all these await for folks having a break at Haldon View Campsite. Those first two are right there on site: this secluded spot is on a farm that has its own fishing lake.

And the forest? That’d be the mighty Haldon Forest, 3,500 acres of woodland a five-minute drive from the farm. If that’s not enough nature for you, Dartmoor National Park is 20 minutes in the other direction – and this nifty spot near Newton Abbot is within a half-hour drive of Exeter, Torquay and Teignmouth too.

If you still need to work up an appetite before eats, a woodland walk runs from the site over a stream bridge and along a bridleway to a country pub. Friendly dogs are welcome to accompany you on this outing, as they are to join you on your Haldon View break (as long as you clean up any mess they make… and your own rubbish, while you’re at it).

Facilities on site include a small play area and a utility room with washing-up sink and washing machine/tumble dryer. The bathroom block (housing four toilets and two showers) crops up time and again in the reviews with guests praising its sparkling cleanliness.

AA 5 pennants

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Bookings must not be for more than 42 consecutive nights.

This is a family-friendly site, so children will be playing on the swings and around the grounds. If you're likely to find this overly noisy, this may not be the site for you.

For the safety of children there are no cars allowed within the main camping area. If you need to park by your tent then please choose an electric grass pitch which is for motorhomes, tents and caravans. Pitches are no more than 50 metres from car park and most are a lot closer.

    Disliked:

Pitch was too small for our tent. Even though I had given measurements. The toilet facilities were disgusting!! 1 toilet for females, 1 toilet for males which were tiny, especially when taking small children. 2 shower cubicles for the site. No hand soap!! Bins over flowing in women's toilets!! Not cleaned regularly!!! Very disappointing.

Quaint and rural feel to the place very cute - liked the glamping feel to it

    Disliked:

Other campers parked over our pitch and as we had a drive away awning when we came back from a day out the pitch next door had gone over our boundary meaning we have to move our awning which was a little annoying
Toilets are been revamped too which will be nice

Close to Torquay and other nice towns. Campsite was not too big which was great, I think 26 pitches only. There are some permanent residents there who are really lovely! The woods down the hill from the parking was amazing, we spent half a day walking around and discovering little villages around (defo take a lunch pack with you!), if it has rained previously, suggest wellies or hiking boots.

    Disliked:

Not so much as a dislike but if you’re a couple with no children then this may not be the best place for you. We were the only campers without children so the noise of babies crying and running around was constant from 6 am onwards. Also our pitch was not level. The facilities were ok, but only one toilet for M&W so queues were at times big. They are building new facilities though! There are shops a few miles away so make sure you got everything you need with you. The campsite is quite close to a busy road so can be a bit noisy.

From the manager...

Thank you for your honest feedback, sadly been a campsite we do tend to attract kids, it usually best to visit outside of school holidays when we attract the old folk who are respectful and quiet!

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower block is very small and cramped so difficult to stick to social distancing at times.

From the manager...

Thanks, sadly at peak time such as Summer holidays then we do struggle with toilets but outside of these times they are hardly used.

A nice small family friendly site, woodland walks were lovely, alpacas and horses wonderful to see, beautiful views and peaceful location. Easy access to lots of areas to visit for the day, good position. Safe got children to play.

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower block was clean, just needed more toilets and showers as it got very busy, but I understand it’s being updated, this will make a positive difference.

From the manager...

Usual story this time of year, hopefully more toilets and showers next year.

Local attractions

Stack the bikes on the back of the car or chuck your boots in the boot for the five-minute drive to Haldon Forest, where there are marked-out trails for walkers and mountain bike riders, along with themed routes for the nippers (can you spot a Gruffalo as you go?) Hire bikes at the visitor centre if you’ve not brought your own, tour the forest on Segways or horse rides, or tackle the treetop trails at the Go Ape adventure park.

If you prefer your fresh air with a salty tinge, head to one of the nearby beaches: Dawlish (15 minutes’ drive), Teignmouth (15 minutes) and Paignton (25 minutes) are all splendid sandy choices. If you pick Paignton it’s also worth scheduling in a bit of time to visit the town’s excellent zoo and/or the Splashdown waterpark.

Folks with small people in tow will no doubt be chuffed to hear that there’s a lengthy list of family-friendly outings to be had around here: you’ll be within a half-hour drive of the Devon Bird of Prey Centre, Buckfast Butterfly Farm, Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary, Babbacombe Model Village and the prehistoric Kents Cavern, to name but a small handful.
