Farm and forest await for folks having a break at Haldon View Campsite, a remote spot on a farm in Devon… The forest? You may have already heard of the mighty Haldon Forest, which has 3,500 acres of woodland a five-minute drive from the farm. If that’s not enough nature for you, Dartmoor National Park is 20 minutes in the other direction – and this nifty spot near Newton Abbot is also within a half-hour drive of Exeter, Torquay and Teignmouth too. If you still need to work up an appetite before eating, head over the stepping stones to access several miles of forest trail (heading all the way to the local pub if you wish). Friendly dogs are welcome to accompany you on this outing, as they welcome at Haldon View Campsite. Facilities on site include a utility room with a washing-up sink and a washing machine/tumble dryer. The shower and toilet block crops up time and again in the reviews with guests praising its sparkling cleanliness.

Local attractions

Stack the bikes on the back of the car or chuck your boots in the boot for the five-minute drive to Haldon Forest, where there are marked-out trails for walkers and mountain bike riders, along with themed routes for the nippers (can you spot a Gruffalo as you go?) Hire bikes at the visitor centre if you’ve not brought your own, tour the forest on Segways or horse rides, or tackle the treetop trails at the Go Ape adventure park. If you prefer your fresh air with a salty tinge, head to one of the nearby beaches: Dawlish (15 minutes’ drive), Teignmouth (15 minutes) and Paignton (25 minutes) are all splendid sandy choices. If you pick Paignton it’s also worth scheduling in a bit of time to visit the town’s excellent zoo and/or the Splashdown waterpark. Folks with small people in tow will no doubt be chuffed to hear that there’s a lengthy list of family-friendly outings to be had around here: you’ll be within a half-hour drive of the Devon Bird of Prey Centre, Buckfast Butterfly Farm, Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary, Babbacombe Model Village and the prehistoric Kents Cavern, to name but a small handful.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Nothing. Didn’t stay.

Disliked: Everything. Place looks like an impromptu site. If you’ve seen the film Snatch you’ll know what I mean when I say I expected someone to ask me if I liked dags whilst trying to sell me a caravan with no wheels. Site was disgusting and looks nothing like the pictures on PitchUp. I know it’s the end of the season but tent pitch area was a patch of dirt overlooked by a straggle of grubby old caravans and assorted vans and cars. The toilet and shower block looked like a potting shed past its best. I’d spent a few days sleeping in a hammock in the woods prior to visiting this site and that was preferable to staying here. Luckily I was able to make a last minute booking elsewhere. This place is disgusting with no redeeming features.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Good location to access Torquay, Sidmouth, Exmouth etc. large supermarkets within 4 miles at Newton Abbot.
Cleaner was friendly and it was cleaned regularly.
Had place to charge phones which was useful.
Pitch level.
3 toilets, 2 showers and one washing up sink.
Cheaper site than some alternatives.

Disliked: Ground was very hard so bring good pegs and something to pull them out with.
Ladies toilet blocked.
No hot water at washing up sink.
Toilet block on a lean, so extra drill holes have been made to drain the shower.
Site space was as advertised but didn't realize this was to include guy ropes and walk way between tents in sizing so 6/8 man tents are a squeeze.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the feedback. Plumber was called to fix the toilet as soon as we could get him in. Please let us know direct if any issues arise and we will sort as soon as we can. Hot water for washing up sink is on the list too, but waiting on parts. Hot water in shower though. Yes sizes are what they are and include guide ropes and everything you own, like other campsites. Average campsite pitch is the same size.

A nice site with all facilities needed to make for a pleasant stay.

Unpowered grass tent site (small)

Liked: The site was easy to find thanks to the directions given regarding turning off of A380 for Olchard. It was a pleasant and friendly site with amenities close at hand. There were plenty of places to explore. If you felt like it you could walk down a hill to a stream cross over via a wooden footbridge. You then had a choice of following a footpath by the stream either way to come to a pub.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: The fact we as a family could make memories with friends and where it was located.

Disliked: The site wasn't made out to be what it looks. Photos need updating! The field was no where near big enough for 13 pitches. Pitch sizes are very small and someone with a 8/10man tent was cozy to their neighbours as pitches weren't spaced out enough. Swing was broken, no toilet roll and no hot water to wash dishes. Dogs off leads running around.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the feedback. Yes it is a small campsite (we have 11 pitches). The pitches are sized, as advertised when booking. We had a report that the swing broke and have now had to remove temporarily. We have had no reports about hot water. We give you our number to contact us anytime so we can resolve any issues, so please keep us informed. We text all guests and have signs about keeping dogs on leads.

Unpowered grass tent site (small)

Liked: Nothing!

Disliked: There was noone to welcome us on arrival. It didn't look anything like the photos, it looked as noone cared about the site. It wasn't very family friendly. There was one swing, one broken. The swing was a hazard, lifted up while the swung. The toilets were missing toilet roll and hand soap.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the feedback. We give you our number to contact us anytime so we can resolve any issues, so please keep us informed if toilets are missing anything. Our cleaner comes in everyday, but some people seem to think they can just take things with them unfortunately. We had a report of a broken swing that weekend and have now removed temporarily. Unfortunately with such a small site it would be impossible to have a front desk manned, but we text with all the info and are happy for you to contacts us anytime.

Liked: location, clean facilities, woodland walk, flat pitch, free fire pit and seating available.
be aware, to take your sturdy pegs as ground is hard. Also the play area and fencing on photos is from 2016 it's not like that now. not ideal for young children. there's no play space for them and the site wasn't even full to the marked pitches capacity.
Very dark area at night you'll need a touch.
We are active walkers and the pub was a 40min walk through the woods. not something you'd do in the evening also a little pricey for lunch at around £18 a burger.
nearest Cockerell doesn't seem to wake to 7am..👍

Disliked: Pitches have no space between.
was not enough parking
x3 toilets for 11 pitches is tight considering most of the pitches had 4 or more people on them.
the wood tail is down a very steep slope with gravel. also you access the stepping stones directly next to the glamping pods. .

From the manager: Thanks for the feedback. Pleased you enjoyed your stay overall. The pitches are sized, as advertised when booking. There is also a whole area without any pitches, between the pitches and toilet block, we have left for people to play games, use the picnic benches and communal fire pit area.
