Five Wyches Farm Camping: Non-electric grass pitch (photo added by manager on 14/07/2023)

General

  • Quiet wild camping on the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • Ness Cove Beach and Babbacombe Model Village 25 minutes’ drive
  • Spacious grass pitches surrounded by woodland; dogs are welcome

Giving a rare chance for groups or families to wild camp on Dartmoor, Five Wyches Farm Camping is a peaceful, family-run site right on the edge of the national park, surrounded by fields, trees and with an abundance of wildlife like deer, rabbits and owls. There’s masses of space, so you can pitch with other guests, or tuck yourselves away in a solitary corner of a meadow.

This Devon spot is a handy base for walkers, cyclists and climbers keen to face new outdoor challenges, and there’s plenty of grass for families and children to have a play around. Pets can join in the fun too, as there is a separate fenced-in field for dogs to have some off-lead runs.

Firepits are available for alfresco cooking adventures or just a campfire – logs, kindling and firelighters can all be supplied if required. It's a short walk to the town, which hosts a number of bijou shops, cafés and restaurants, and for those who like a pint or two, there are a number of pubs. The town also has a number of small supermarkets (five minutes' drive) where you can pick up barbecue goodies and other camping essentials. For those who prefer a quiet evening in camp, stay up for the dark skies abundant in stars.

Simple eco-friendly amenities include fresh water, long-drop compost toilets and a hot outdoor shower. Recycling is actively encouraged, and there are facilities for chemical toilets and grey waste water.

Lovely peaceful, basic, campsite in great proximity for Dartmoor and the interesting town of Bovey Tracy. Mel was a super communicative and helpful camp warden, living on site. The outdoor shower was a delight on the one sunny morning of our stay, though probably wouldn't have been so lovely in the wind and rain that we experienced most of the time!

The downside was that the days of rain before and during our stay made the field very wet and unsuitable for the campervan, so we left that at the top of the field and just pitched the tent at the electric hookup. Mel had taken care to warn us about this before we arrived and lent us an adaptor so that we could use the hookup with the tent.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike, we loved the campsite.

I stayed at Five Wyches for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The site was so peaceful and had a real "back to nature" feel. Facilities are good - a couple of compost toilets, outdoor heated shower, drinking water point, recycling area and chemical toilet disposal. All in all a lovely site and I shall definitely be back!

Small peaceful site. Mel and Keith were lovely. Toilets and shower kept nice and clean. Could have stayed there much longer! They have a card reader for sale of logs so no trip to the garage or cashpoint needed.

The welcome on arrival was very warm, Mel came straight out to meet us and show us to our pitch, explained where everything was.
The toilet as others have mentioned was very clean and no toilet smell, the system works, the outdoor shower was interesting, we have our own so didn’t try it, but it’s hooked up to gas so a warm shower, maybe more for summer use!

    Disliked:

Nothing to do with the campsite and they have no influence over this, the walk into Bovey is 10-15 minutes down a pretty busy (main route onto Dartmoor) road with no pavements, it’s narrow and you have to press yourself into the bushes when cars come, which is often, with a dog in tow, it was interesting!!!
