General
- Quiet wild camping on the edge of Dartmoor National Park
- Ness Cove Beach and Babbacombe Model Village 25 minutes’ drive
- Spacious grass pitches surrounded by woodland; dogs are welcome
Giving a rare chance for groups or families to wild camp on Dartmoor, Five Wyches Farm Camping is a peaceful, family-run site right on the edge of the national park, surrounded by fields, trees and with an abundance of wildlife like deer, rabbits and owls. There’s masses of space, so you can pitch with other guests, or tuck yourselves away in a solitary corner of a meadow.
This Devon spot is a handy base for walkers, cyclists and climbers keen to face new outdoor challenges, and there’s plenty of grass for families and children to have a play around. Pets can join in the fun too, as there is a separate fenced-in field for dogs to have some off-lead runs.
Firepits are available for alfresco cooking adventures or just a campfire – logs, kindling and firelighters can all be supplied if required. It's a short walk to the town, which hosts a number of bijou shops, cafés and restaurants, and for those who like a pint or two, there are a number of pubs. The town also has a number of small supermarkets (five minutes' drive) where you can pick up barbecue goodies and other camping essentials. For those who prefer a quiet evening in camp, stay up for the dark skies abundant in stars.
Simple eco-friendly amenities include fresh water, long-drop compost toilets and a hot outdoor shower. Recycling is actively encouraged, and there are facilities for chemical toilets and grey waste water.

Local attractions
All you active types can dash off into Dartmoor National Park (right from your pitch, too) for outdoor adventures scrambling up rocky tors, cycling the Templar Way (15 minutes’ bike ride), and walking to ancient relics including the prehistoric standing stones at Scorhill Stone Circle (35 minutes’ drive). Alternatively, visit the local heated outdoor pool (20 minutes' walk) for an active or leisurely swim.
If your schedule is taking you towards the coast, the popular beach at Teignmouth is backed by seafood cafés, and you can have a go on the amusements along the 19th-century pier. The shingle at Ness Cove (both 25 minutes' drive) is a quieter option where dogs are welcome all year around.
Other family days out include the Becky Falls Ancient Woodland Park (10 minutes), the Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves (35 minutes) or the scale models of British landmarks at Babbacombe Model Village (25 minutes). If you hit a rainy day, make straight for many local indoor attractions in the area.
