  • In a conservation area next to a pub garden on the Rame peninsula
  • Five minutes' drive to the nearest beach; two mins' stroll from a lake
  • A 10-minute drive from Kingsand and Cawsand seaside towns
Breathe in the Cornish air from St John Inn, a small and quiet adults-only site surrounded by trees and hedges next to a beer garden in a conservation area a mile from the nearest beach… The pub at this park is run by friendly owners Gill and Rob and stays open from Thursdays to Sundays serving real ale, cider and lager. What more could you ever need from a traditional boozer, you may ask? Well, there are also regular events such as fish and chip nights, trivia quizzes, music and dancing to get you mingling with other guests... If you're not feeling so fresh the morning after the night before, take off for Torpoint (10 minutes’ drive) for winding walks along the rather ravishing Rame peninsula or seek out the nearest three-mile stretch of sandy beach (within a five-minute drive) and blow the cobwebs away with a dip. The site’s also in a prime place for birdwatching being a couple of minutes walk from St John’s Lake, a Site of Special Scientific Interest home to flocks of wading birds and seabirds; more walks are all around too, including along the banks of the River Tamar a short stroll away. St John Inn has some level and some gently sloping areas, grass pitches, electric hook-up and plenty of room for parking. Toilets and washing-up facilities are at the back of the pub and stay open 24 hours a day. For public transport and supplies, buses stop a mile away at Antony, taxis are available two and a half miles away at Torpoint, and the nearest shop is a mile and a half away at Millbrook.

Local attractions

Yet more Cornish coast is at the seaside towns of Kingsand and Cawsand, 10 minutes away in the car, while Looe is another lovely settlement worth a visit for its family-friendly beach 25 minutes away. Drive to this village for the monkeys at the topnotch sanctuary and venture to the fishing port for a wander around the old cottages too… For more animals, a deer park is at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, 15 minutes’ drive from the inn, a spot where you can also amble along a shoreline through formal and informal gardens; grand scenery is also all around Antony House five minutes drive from site, an early 18th-century house cared for by the National Trust. Across the border, Plymouth is around 45 minutes’ drive – head here for a look at the underwater creatures at the National Marine Aquarium – or take a jaunt towards the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Centre (50 minutes) for strolls in sprawling countryside.

Vuilnisbakken vol.
