St John Inn: The pub

General

  • In a conservation area next to a pub garden on the Rame peninsula
  • Five minutes' drive to the nearest beach; two mins' stroll from a lake
  • A 10-minute drive from Kingsand and Cawsand seaside towns

Breathe in the Cornish air from St John Inn, a small and quiet adults-only site surrounded by trees and hedges next to a beer garden in a conservation area a mile from the nearest beach… The pub at this park is run by friendly owners Gill and Rob and stays open from Thursdays to Sundays serving real ale, cider and lager.

What more could you ever need from a traditional boozer, you may ask? Well, there are also regular events such as fish and chip nights, trivia quizzes, music and dancing to get you mingling with other guests...

If you're not feeling so fresh the morning after the night before, take off for Torpoint (10 minutes’ drive) for winding walks along the rather ravishing Rame peninsula or seek out the nearest three-mile stretch of sandy beach (within a five-minute drive) and blow the cobwebs away with a dip.

The site’s also in a prime place for birdwatching being a couple of minutes walk from St John’s Lake, a Site of Special Scientific Interest home to flocks of wading birds and seabirds; more walks are all around too, including along the banks of the River Tamar a short stroll away.

St John Inn has some level and some gently sloping areas, grass pitches, electric hook-up and plenty of room for parking. Toilets and washing-up facilities are at the back of the pub and stay open 24 hours a day. For public transport and supplies, buses stop a mile away at Antony, taxis are available two and a half miles away at Torpoint, and the nearest shop is a mile and a half away at Millbrook.

Tranquil small campsite in hilly unspoilt part of Cornwall25/09/2022

This lovely rural camping site is located in a small terraced orchard/garden behind the village pub.
Just a few camping pitches, with or without electricity and a couple of really attractive glamping pods. Electric pitches are closest to the public pub garden.
The facilities are quirky, clean and perfect adequate. Shower is good and hot. Use of fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster.
I was privileged to be staying here to coincide with their CAMRA Cornish pub of the year award presentation.
The landlords and campsite owners, Gill and Rob, so deserve this prestigious award. They are lovely helpful people who have built up this peaceful community pub, small 'honesty shop' and camping area over the past 5 years after it had been closed and semi derelict for some years.
So lovely to meet folk who put community before profit.
Don't be put off by the proximity of the pub. It's only open Thurs to Sunday and just provide beautifully kept beers and pasties, pork pies etc, other than hugely popular excellent quality great value hot meals on a Friday provided by alll outside caterer.
There was no real noise from the pub to intrude on the peace and quiet of the camping area during my stay.
Another bonus is that cars are left on the pub car park and don't intrude on the camping area.
    A lovely tranquil camping experience.

The site was quiet and clean, a real escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The owners were really kind and nothing was too much trouble. The pub had great food too! Would definitely visit again!

    Disliked:

The shower and toilets were in a shed with limited hot water as it runs off a gas cylinder. That said, they were clean and acceptable for our short stay.
